How do x-pipes differ?

basically there are diffenet desings. bassani for example is more like a little camber. if you go look at the bassani pipe it looks alot diffenet in design to some of the others. magnaflow is a bit diffent from vrs. upr is almost identical to vrs. vrs is similiar to dr. gas in the way the x is welded but the x is closer to the collector on the dr. gas. so all of that is going to make a diffence is sound. The mufflers will still make the biggest difference but where the exhaust crosses over will "tune" the sound a bit.

what you are saying would be true if they all located the x pipe a certain distance in the pipe and made the crosover exactly the same but if you really look at all the pipes you will see they don't.
 
Some of the companies that make X pipes don't make a good flowing collector at the X. I think Bassani is the most obvious if you cut it open and look at the X you can see it's not as free flowing as some other companies. Dr. Gas is the easiest to see since it comes in seperate pieces that need to be welded. Their X is very smooth and not restrictive.

As Hognutz stated where the X is placed in the pipe is very important since it will change how it will flow which in turn changes the performance values and give it a different tone. Unless you want to squeeze every bit of performance out of your exhaust most people just go with what they think sounds good go check out http://www.mustangexhaust.com/ and see what you like or what you pocketbook tells you to get and go from there.

Placement of the crossover makes a difference in sound. Some companies connect 4 pieces of pipe to a central "X" piece; whereas, some other companies (VRS, for example) simply weld the 2 pipes together. I'm sure that this also makes a difference in sound. Furthermore, catalytic converters tend to serve as baffles by dampening the sound a bit. Hope this helps!

Due to differences in exhaust flow & perfromance from 1 bank of your engine to your other, a crossover from one exhaust pipe to the other acutally helps performance. Sometimes one port pushes out less exhaust gases than the other port & a crossover really early in the flow helps even things out, increasing performance.

Correct. Basically all an H-pipe does is connect 2 otherwise parallel pipes perpendicularly. An x-pipe actually does a way better job of angling the 2 otherwise parallel pipes to a junction, increasing flow & performance.
 
then there is the "O" pipe. with 100% backpressure it really brings out the hp.

Price is what is boils down to it's easier to place 1 strait pipe in between 2 pipes than it is to merge 2 pipes together and still have it freeflowing. Emmisons might have something to do with it but I'm unsure of that.

Well, you'll soon discover when it comes time to change your transmission fluid that you can't drop the pan without removing the X-pipe. The pan drops easily between the factory "H." It would make sense for Ford to use "X" pipes, because they could charge more labor for tranny fluid changes. :rolleyes:
