I am trying to take off the heads on my stang and i was hoping the be able to take them offf by just unscrewing the exhaust manifold from the head but there are those stupid bolts under the exhaust manifold that I have to take off. So how do you get to the screws where the exhaust manifolds meets the pipe? It seems like the cats are in the way. Should I go from the top or bottom? It also looks like Ill need to use a ratchet because there is a little lip on the connection part.

definetly gonna need to use a ratchet, and you have to get them from underneath. use lots of pb blaster or heat them up with a torch making sure not to burn anything

Yeah, you can only get to the header-to-h-pipe bolts from the bottom. I usually use a couple extensions, sometimes a wobbly, and a deep socket. 5/8 if I remember, but it could be 9/16.

I've found it's a LOT easier if I remove one of the 02 sensors to make room for the extension. I don't remember which one, but you'll figure it out when you're under there.

If you have one of those "wobbly extensions" which let the socket pivot a little bit, that could be helpfull too.

It's a pain in the ass the first time you do it, but once you figure out the correct route for the extensions it's not too bad.

Good luck!

they are usually just rusted as hell. might as well buy a 10 dollar propane torch at the parts store. ive had really good luck with a torch and candle wax. just heat it up and push the candle onto the threads so that it gets into the threads and than try to loosen it. or just soak them with pb blaster overnight and than again before you try to take them off
