Only problem I have is I hear a thump in the car when I put it in first and when I shift into second. Anyone know what this is?

It's just normal transmission noise. My GT with 750 miles does the same thing.

Yan, stop being so worried about that, your gonna find problems with every cars if you look hard enough.

Its a car, sometimes things break, (you should know with your porsheaa )

If you are already that scared, what will it be dropping the clutch on slicks at 5k rpms???

my 2 cents, have fun with the car dude!

No problems yet .Just a typical light grind in second first thing in the morning ,when the fluid hasn't gone throught the whole thing yet.
Was the same on my ol' 5.0L's T-5,and world class T-5 i had installed in it!!

Mine's just fine. Only when it's very cold out will the 1-2 shift feel a little rougher than normal, but it's far from even annoying me. Especially after it warms up, it just slides right into gear.

Mine does the same thing. Other than that, I love it. Never missed a gear.

I almost bought a GT 2001 with 12 000 miles this weekend. Before officially signing everything, I obviously wanted to read a bit about this generation. I found this forum and began to read about the huge tranny problem. Is it THAT spread? Will I AUTOMATICALLY blow my tranny after X miles? Who did NOT have tranny problems after a good amount of miles and do you drag race often? The Stang is sooooooo nice that I would be ready to take the risk.

Is it possible to swap for the tranny of the older gens (1999-2000)?

Thanks for your help

I'm assuming the 2001 GT you purchased has the Tremec 3650, not the T-45. 2001's came with either depending on the build date.

My Gt has the 3650. It's notchier than I'd like and grinds a little on the 1-2 until the tranny fluid warms up to operating temps, but these problems/issue are pretty manageable in the warmer months. However, I've got 25,000 miles on it with over 30 passes and 6 of those passes were with drag radials. No major issues to date. The 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shifts stick hard when I'm drag racing. I'm not so sure I've felt the T-45 stick so well (seems like they might not have as much clamping power) so I'd say I'd probably prefer the 3650 if you can take the notchiness of the shifter when tooling around town. And it's not like there isn't a pause on the 1-2 and 2-3 with the T-45! Really, the T-5, T-45, and 3650 are all notchy when you think about it! Yet I believe the 3650 is the "strongest" according to TTC's website.

Just changed the fluid in my 3650 the other day....I used Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. Tremec lowered the fill level specs, there should be about 3.2-3.4 quarts in the 3650 of Dexron III ATF. I never had the 1-2 as bad as other people, but I still noticed a difference in how smooth it shifts, especially when the car has been sitting for a while. This is in warm weather too, I'll probably see an even bigger difference when winter comes back around.
