one of the last things to do to the 5.0 HO install in the ranger is the fuel system. how much pressure do i need out of an aftermarket inline electric fuel pump? the factory one for the donor car is listed at 65psi (91 cougar xr-7), other 5.0 cars are listed as low as 40-45. how much is enough? what psi does the regulator start sending the fuel back to the tank anyway? thanks!

Unless you have an aftermarket fuel system the fuel will never be recycled back into the tank. OEM applications use a closed fuel system. I would recommend 43.5 psi.

Stock fuel pressure for a fox is ~39.5.
Just guessing, but I think the regulator would modulate how much is sent back to the tank to maintain the set PSI?
IDK if the Ranger is a closed system, but if it's like a Fox it is a return style system.

mine runs 40 psi at idle and 42 with 5th gear acceration. The 5.0 mustang does return back to the gas tank but not sure for the ranger

Yeah I don't know what I was thinking when I typed that up. I stand corrected.

the stock 2.3 ranger setup had two fuel pumps, one in the tank that ran 6psi and one booster on the fram rail that ran about 40 or so. years ago when i put a 5.0 in the thing, i carbed it and just used only the 6psi in tank unit with no return. now that i am going to inject it i plan to keep using the in tank 6psi unit and use another inline as a booster as the factory did (mainly to avoid the hassle of dropping the tank/pulling the bed, and running high pressure fuel line of that length). i want to mount an adequately rated pump under the hood somewhere and just run high pressure hose from it to the intake. i just dont know what psi rating to look for in a pump. various 5.0 models i look at call for anywhere from 40-65. what happens if i put on a 65psi unit and it only needs 40? i am assuming one of two things. one, the regulator sends the overage back to the tank, or two, the pump itself bleeds off the pressure that the regulator wont let past itself.
so, if i put on a 65 psi unit, what can i expect? what about a 40psi unit? i tend to think either will work.

You can get an adjustable regulator. Stock 5.0's run a tad under 40 PSI, so one that goes from 30-65 would work.
