how to advance timing?

warm motor. remove SPOUT. loosen (not remove) the hold-down bolt. set timing (before hand, you might need to clean the balancer [with the motor off and cold], and then mark the timing mark you desire with paint, etc to you can see it).

tighten hold down bolt, recheck timing (dizzy can walk while tightening the bolt). shut car off. reinstall the SPOUT.

that is the down and dirty quick version.

it's a crown looking bolt and you will need a special tool. at least, I can't do it without the tool, unless you are superman and can bend a 1/2 inch wrench lol. anyways, you're gonna have to get yer hands dirty. just look for the base of the distributor you will see the bolt. it's located vertically. and to adjust it I think you go clockwise to advance. there is a spark output connector (SPOUT) that you have to remove because if you try to advance with it in, teh computer will adjust it back. it's located on the passenger side stut tower, right next to teh airbox, it is a little gray plastic plug into a black harness. use a timing light.

for me, a 1/4" drive with two extensions and a swivel joint makes it no problem to loosen. just watch for when the swivel is gonna load up (bind) if you dont use a ball-in-socket kind.

I think they make special wrenches for it too (never tried or looked for one).

yep, like I mentioned before. i do that. I will clean the balancer and then use a silver marker to fill the line for 10 and 20*. i then use a dot on each hash mark between (every two degrees) so i can do whatever i want. usually a mark on whatever time you desire is enough.

and there is a timing pointer on the pass side of the balancer (at about 10-11:00 o'clock). you end up having the gun sitting near the front of the alternator (so be careful!) and you can hit the marks while lookin at the pointer.

I think that Andy (Rio5.0) has posted pics of the timing marker, etc.

degreaser like Simple green. you can use whatever you have that gets the thing clean and allows a marker or paint to stick (hence the degreaser for me).

brake cleaner

did you have the light hooked up to plug #1 (and with many inductive lights, there is an arrow to indicate the flow of juice. that mark is on the inductive clip).

are you pulling the trigger (sorry, i had to ask).

TDC does not matter since the light pulses in phase with the spark signal. being at TDC is good if removing the dizzy (which you are not doing to time it).

when you pull the trigger, if the light is not pulsing, the light is bad or you have a bad connection. i would figure that out before even trying to time it (i.e. try using a different plug wire to see what is going on with the light).

#1 cylinder is on the passenger side... front

aim light downward from passenger side, right next to top coolant hose.
Move the hose over slightly with your other hand. Use mechanics gloves for heat and so you don't get shocked by a cracked wire...
