How To Avoid Issues With 17x8 Cobra R's On An 89 Gt?

I have an 89 GT vert. Im slightly lowered, maybe an inch. I currently have stock turbines with BFGoodrich rwl radial t/a's 225/60/15. No rubbing of any kind. I was wanting to add the 95 Cobra R style wheels, but what tire size are people running so the dont rub ground effects? And with your size that doesnt rub the ground effects, does it rub the inside suspension? Has anyone done a proper tire size and steering limiter combo that has no rubbing at all? Do the dustcaps need to be hammered for the centercaps to fit?

4-lug? or 5-lug?

The 4 lug versions are sizes so that there really isn't much of a issue with contact provided not lowered too much.

5-lug versions all depends on what offset you pick. If sticking with 17x8 rims, go with offsets similar to 94-04 mustang 17x8 wheels.

Also, you'll need a 5-lug conversion obviously, and may have fitament issues up front unless you do Sn95 front spindles and brakes

Its 4 lug. I wanna stay that way unless I wanted to switch back to stock.

Basically just a wheel swap. From stock to 17x8, but I want to know the tire sizes up front that I dont have rubbing issues, especially on ground effects. The only wheels Im considering aside from keeping stock is 17x8 Cobra R style or 17x8 Pony wheels.

This was with 245/45/17 fronts and 275/40-17 rear. 17x9 wheels with eibach springs,struts and shocks with a UPR bumpsteer kit and mm cc plates. No clearance issues

Edit: with 17x8 keep the front tires around 245/45 or 235/45 and you'll have plenty of room. It's a very common size. I highly recommend getting some cc plates and the UPR or steeda bumpsteer kit. It really helps with alignment and allowing the front end to not "jump" around with bumps in the road etc. That can be a problem with lowering springs. I have since gone to coilovers and even lower frontend without a problem. I am going to raise it back up a 1/4" or so for a cleaner level look.

245/45/17 would be common size, but if really concerned with rub, go 235/45/17

It won't matter. Same thing for your car. Tons of GT's with that wheel/tire combo. The 245's will work. I just used the picture for a reference.

I hear guys say 245/45/17 rub on their cars. I really want people with these size wheels on their car currently, to let me know what size tires they have and if they rub anywhere.

Then go down one size to 235's if you don't believe me and want more clearance lol.

every car is different- You can't expect someone to tell you 100% what tire is or is not going to rub on your car. Has your car been lowered, in an accident, what offset wheels,etc I have 245/14/17 on my 90 and it rubs only when you lock the wheel. It does not have rack limiters on it yet- too lazy to put them on lol

Yeah, I might. I know pre-87 GT's and LX's, along with 91-93 dont have the same issues. I just dont want to invest in a headache.

I have 245/45 r17 on 17x9 Fobra R's in the front the tire doesn't rub its the rim hits the a-arm when close to full lock.

This. I have 17x9 rims. Only the pass side rubs. A rack limiter will probably be needed.

There were only two wheel choices I gave, and my car hasn't been wrecked. Lowered an inch at most. Ok cool. No issues with the dustcaps hitting the wheel centercaps on the Cobra R's??
Sounds pretty promising.

Like previously mentioned, the four lug wheels were designed for a Fox and are a direct bolt on.

I ran 17x8 PonyR rims with 245/45-17. No rubbing or anything. Direct bolt-on. You'll be fine.

I've got 17x8 with 235/45/17 on my 88 LX. Not really lowered due to the Mach 1 springs, but I'm comfortable I could get 245/45/17 up front that it's what I'll select the next time I get tired.
