How to Fix a Leaning Seat?

My driver seat has the ghetto lean thing going on and it's really uncomfortable. It leans back too far and is crooked from side to side. This seems to be a common problem with Foxes and I was wondering if there's a common part or area that breaks and can be fixed or if I sould try to find another seat frame. I was going to pay an upholster $100 to pull off the cover and re-install it so I could find out what's wrong inside.

not to sound like a dick, but it would probably be easier and cheaper to buy a used seat that matches, unless you have custom upholstery already. I've taken seats apart before and it's a headache.

i would find some late model seats and swap them in. Its simple and looks nicer IMO

Trying to find a sport seat with 92-93 black upholstry has been impossible. My covers are in great shape and I want to keep the stock look with my interior - that's why I want to fix the seat. And besides, I'm a tall guy and SN95 seats would put my head into the headliner.

The seat back upholstery unzips once you have the back detached from the bottom. The frame inside cracks in several places, and sometimes it can be welded to fix it. Getting the headrest off is the hardest part of the job. Do a search using Hissin50 user name and you will find a very old post describing removing the headrest with pictures.

It's worth a try but I had two seats welded up, both broke again with several weeks of repair.

Same problem here, my seats are much taller and my head is about 1" away from the head liner, so when i wear a helmet i have to kinda tilt my head to the side

I removed the upper seat skin and welded the back rest of the driver's seat about 2 1/2 years ago. Have about 10,000 miles on it and no issues, knock on wood. Make damn sure that you cover the seat skin with a weld proof material or you will have burn marks all over it...

I looked for a used seat, but decided that it would have the same weak spots and break just like the original. As someone mentioned, once you understand the headrest, getting the back skin off is not a big issue. Now getting the seat skin off is another story.

Yeah, I'm more comfortable in a Fox seat. I was in a buddy's car with SN95 seats and was too high for me. I guess I'll try to pull it apart and see what's up.

In this old crappy pic, you can kinda see how it's not straight. The console side of the seat is what leans back too far.

The one time I got a J/Y seat back frame, it was starting to come apart where the two halves of the frame were spot welded together. I got out my trusty pneumatic aircraft rivet gun and riveted the frame area with solid monel rivets. The repair lasted longer than the car did...

The seat bottom is very easy to swap over the fabric if you have a good seat bottom with bad upholstery on it. I used a later model seat bottom in my '84 to correct the broken seat frame. The seat back unbolts easily from the base and just as easily bolted to the new base. The whole swap took less than an hour including figuring out how to get the upholstery transferred to the good seat bottom.

It looks like the seat back is the problem in your case with lots of good info posted. Good luck fixing the seat lean.

Plus 1 for repair. If your covers are good the seats are not that hard to take apart. Once you find the broken welds or cracked seat frame you can usually weld them back up and even add some reinforcement. If you don't/can't weld, a lot of times a muffler shop on a slow day will hook you up for a couple of bucks.
