my car kicks out of 3rd sometimes. it only has 20,000 miles on it. i was told it was either my shifter stops not adjusted right or a bent shift fork. i backed the stops on the shifter all the way out. so it has to be bent shift forks right? how do i fix?

Pull the tranny and replace them. But really, unless you have beat on the tranny you shouldn'y have a bent fork. Mine didn't break until 165K miles and numerous power shifts at the track. Now a bad synchro could be the culprit. At 20K miles that really isn't likely either but it could happen.

Many people have gotten Ford to correct this for free. It does not hurt to try. Start by reading the sticky.

The TSB issue you are talking about is on the TR-3650 trans, his car is a 2000 so it has a T-45. Unless he has a extended service contract I highly doubt ford will help him out, sure if I was him I would try and if he has a good relation with a dealer that he does a lot of buisness with maybe they could go to bat for him.

The trans has to be removed and disassembled for the shift forks to be replaced, this is a costly repair.

Next time do not sue the shift stops, thats what causes this problem.

i have an 02 gt and had the trans tsb done after fighting with a bunch of dealerships and ford.mine also kicks out of 2nd and 3rd like yours but only under heavy acceleration.it doesn't do it under normal driving conditions.it still did it even after the tsb.my warranty is up and my car has only 15,000 miles on it and i've never had it at the track or street racing.i'm holding up on doing major mods because of the trans .a new tarns would be nice but probably a couple grand or more.i guess i'll have to live with it for now!

I dunno.....$475 would have been a nice down on a new TKO or T56.

I considered but...1) I didn't have the extra funds to get one. 2) I run at the track only so often. 3)This tranny lasted until 165K miles. 4)The new shift forks are of a better design...so all of that went into my thoughts when I decided to get the original fixed.

The shift forks aren't necessarily garanteed to be the problem. It could also be the synchro slider and the matching gears engagement teeth becoming worn and rounded over and failing to stay meshed under load.

Only way to tell is to open the trans
