I have a friends computer that he had lying around that I want to plug into my car to do some troubleshooting. The problem is that the identification sticker is gone, so I don't know if the computer is for an auto or manual car. Is there any way to tell the difference other than that sticker? He says its probably an A9L but my understanding is that I might fry it if I plug it into my 5-speed car and it ends up being an A9P.

Bad idea, you will likely either damage the computer or create more problems.
What are the issues?

Id pull the cover and check the capacitors for corrosion before i did anything with it. If you discover corrosion then the ECU needs refurbishing. Send it to the service provider for a replacement and i bet they’ll let you pick what you want as a replacement.

Look at the service code on the PCB (printed circuit board)

Pop the cover off, and on the circuit board you’ll usually find the catch code (A9L, A9P, A3M, etc.) silkscreened in white.

It’s not always in the same place, but usually on one of the larger flat areas near the edge connectors.
