How would I go about installing a set of steering rack bushings?

I got under the car a week ago to install springs, struts, etc... and tried to change out the steering rack bushings. I removed the bolts, but the rack wouldn't move. My brother made a good point that the steering shaft from the steering wheel to the rack was attached; do I have to detach the steering shaft from the rack? How do I do this?

Thanks :SNSign: for the help!

I just jacked my car up so the front wheels could both point in, giving me enough room to pull the steering rack away from the k-member to get to the bushings.

The steering shaft needs to be disconnected from the rack for the rack to move far enough forward. Its a 13mm or 15 mm bolt that needs to be undone. Make sure you take a marker and draw a line on the shaft and coupler so you can retain the proper alignment and orientation of them. I thought I could slide the rack forward w/o disconnecting the shaft and I finally gave up and disconnected it. Came right off after that.
