I want to do this: View attachment 374651

Where should I start...which grain of sandpaper?....what type of paint?

It seems like it would be quicker to paint the entire thing red, let it dry and then tape it off and do the white.

Yeah, I thought about buying it, but I'd like to try it myself....just to tinker.

well powdercoating would be better. Eastwood has a kit you can use and it uses a standard oven to cure it.

Ehh, that kit is $180 - I'm looking for a cheaper route.

i just painted my ford logo blue with heat resistant spray paint, not caring about overspray at all (didn't even tape anything off). i let it dry, taped off the ford logo, and then painted everything all black (no taping off anything except the ford logo), with heat resistant spraypaint. after it dried, i took a block and sandpaper, and sanded the paint on the raised parts off, and it leaves it looking like that picture, just different colors.......... the recessed areas don't lose any paint, and all the raised lines and letters will have an aluminum finish. worked great for me. VERY easy to do.
