It's kind of a trial and error process. First and foremost, make sure you have a high enough octane to withstand the higher base timing. After that, it's fairly straightforward. I've always done mine warm, to make sure my idle speed is at its lowest, but I'm not convinced this makes any difference whatsoever because the computer won't advance the timing at all. Pull the SPOUT connector, loosen your distributor hold down, put your timing light on the number 1 plug wire, and turn the distributor to the desired setting. Tighten the hold down, verify timing one last time, put the SPOUT back. Easy as can be

Oops, the trial and error part is making sure there's no pinging once you've set the timing at the desired point. Forgot to add that before.

i know i point it at the balancer, but do i need to mark it?

Just mark the settings in 2 degree increments with a grease pencil or something that will show up under the light. Otherwise, it's a PITA trying to figure out what you're pointing at.

Here is a quick overview.

I use a silver sharpie on the balancer, though any method works fine.

When done correctly and carefully you can get some nice gains. Even more than I thought. With my mods (which is not much) I gained 12.2 rwhp and 11.3 rwtq from 3deg's of timing. With 93 oct, no pinging and @13.00 A/F.

ok i've got it all down...but lets say i mark the 14* mark on the balancer, crank up the car, then point the light at the balancer...what am i looking for? When its timed at 14* will the light blink right on the mark i made? so i should turn it till i get that, or what? thats what i'm confused on...

The light flashes exactly on the #1 spark fire. It makes kind of a strobe effect that freezes the balancer in your view. So you watch the balancer and the timing mark (a little silver piece of metal pointing over the balancer). It is probably best viewed looking down from standing over the passenger fender, or passenger side of the front bumper. Anyway, it's hard to get a good line of sight at the mark and get the light pointed right at the mark too.

What you are looking for is the position of your mark (or marks) in relation to the silver metal thing. Turn the distributor (slowly!) until you line the two up. A little nudge on the dist. makes a lot of timing.

By the way, be very careful around the accessory belt. You may need to move around a bit to get a good view, and when I try to do it, I find myself getting uncomfortably close to that belt!
