How To: Remove Dipstick

Is that a retarded question?

I'm talking about the engine and I wasn't sure if it just pulled out or what. I couldn't tell from looking at the bottom.

I also could not find anything on here or online, so I guess it is easier than I imagine.

remove dipstick from manifold bolt and it pulls out its not easy in most cases and you may have to go under vehicle with an adjustable wrench and hammer i had to. i pulled up on dipstick and it only moved 1 inch then i went under vehicle and adjusted adj. wrench to the tube diameter placed wrench on the tube under the bevel where tube stop meets the block and hammered up on wrench to remove tube.... but in some cases it will come out after removing manifold bolt and pulling up on tube.... good luck...

Thanks again, just got it off with some vice grips and a gash through my pinky finger. :D

It's cool Mootang, I guess it was kind of a stupid question. But I would rather ask a stupid question then have come back on here posting how I ripped the dipstick from the engine. :p

just a curiousity question here, but why are you taking out the dipstick? putting that thing back in is a **********er. enough of a pain at least for me to NEVER want to have to deal with it again. mine fell out during my longtube install and took 2 people, some bending, and about 30 minutes to get back in. if you can avoid removing it, that would definitely be my recommendation.

it was probably just a pain in the ass because you have long tubes.

and Kevin there is no such thing as a stupid question. better safe than sorry. I got your user name confused with someone elses that has been on the board for a while.

I am taking it out because somehow my dipstick rusted out and half got stuck in the tube, so I needed to buy a new one.

I am not sure how/why it rusted unless there is water in my oil, but I haven't seen any yet.

My car is cursed.

mine was broken too; it had a hole in it when i bought it. so i went to a gas station near work and asked them to do an oil change and how much it would cost to replace the dipstick.

long story short, they pulled the dipstick out and cut it in half and then they told me it would cost $250 to replace it.

what a bunch of f**king a$$holes! they must rip off everyone who takes their car there!

anyway i told them that i would do it myself and got my car out of there as fast as possible. even though the ride back to work was less than a mile, the oil came out all over the place and it was smoking like crazy.

so i took the metro home that night and took the car very gently to my regular mechanic after topping the oil off and shoving the bottom half of the dipstick back in the hole as best i could. i must have looked like an idiot there under my car in the parking lot at work.

that was the first and last time i ever went to those bastards for anything, even gas.

so anyway, yeah, there's my little dipstick story

When I did my header install, the dipstick just slid right out with slight pressure .... and putting it back in was just as easy.

I will be taking it out again soon so I can install one of those Lokar one's. I've already broken the stick-to-header bracket in TWO places trying to bolt it up!

They wanted to charge $250 because you live in BETHESDA (SMILES).

Yeah same here mine practically fell off when i did my header install. For some reason my is in so loose. I cant get it into position to bolt back to the headers so i just zip tied it in place. Im getting a locar one when i start workin on my new engine.
