How to replace fuel pressure regulator

Hey guys, I'm trying to replace the stock FPR with an Adjustable one, but the stock one seems kinda hard to get to. It's attached by three hex screws which are upside-down, making it hard to reach.

I removed the EGR valve so far, but from how inaccessible the hex screws of the FPR are, I'm thinking I might have to remove the throttle body assembly as well.

For anyone who's replaced the FPR on your Mustang, what's the easiest way to do it?

If it's on the back of the rail on the passenger side (that's the fox location, I'm pretty sure it's the same for SN cars) you'll want to pull the upper intake and it will be easy to access. Just relieve fuel pressure and then swap it out, you'll want to have a fuel pressure gauge handy to set FP once it's on.

Any reason you are swapping FPRs?

what they said^ even with everything out of the way it still can be a pain in the ass, especially if its been there for 20 years (holy sht our cars are old, haha)

I need to get one, the seals in my pos bbk one went out after only a year, started shooting fuel out of vac port causeing my car to knock like crazy.

anybody have bad luck with the holley ones?

I replaced my first one with everything still on, I think I used a small mirror for help - it was a pain making numerous tiny turns. The second one, I think I just loosened the upper intake enough to get to the FPR. Pulling the upper intake is not that hard and makes the job easier. I went back to the stock Ford style FPR. The aftermarkets have their problems and many say the computer compensates for any increase the FPR might give anyway.

Yeah, I figured it might come down to removing the upper intake. Is there a gasket that I need to get to replace an old one when I remove it?

I'm replacing the stock FPR with a Professional Products Adjustable Fuel Pressure regulator. I'm currently experiencing a rich condition with my car and I've seen the fp as high as 55-60 psi about 15 min after warmup. At that point, the car begins to bog down (I think the ECM is detecting the rich contidion and hight fuel pressure and is cutting the power to the injectors to try and compensate) until it dies. I believe it's due to a faulty fpr, as the whole point of it is to regulate the fp and keep it steady.

BTW, I have a timing issue with it as well (I'm the guy who started the "Calling all tech wizards, here's a doozy..." thread), and I just need to keep the fuel pressure steady to keep the engine running so I can get it to a mechanic who can take a look. At this point, even though I set the timing, it's experiencing a very rich condition, and when the ECM goes into closed loop, it detects that and begins to shut down the engine.

I'll keep you guys posted...see what happens.

Thanks for the tips!

The upper intake gasket is generally considered to be re-useable by most. Yes, I've been following your other thread. Maybe it is the FPR, I'm sure the fuel pressure in not supposed to be that high. You might get by without removing the entire upper, there are some vacuum hoses under there that are hard to get back on if you can avoid it. Make sure no loose parts go down your intake... :( Good luck with it ! :nice:
