I have a list of cars that I got from someone on this website, But Im afraid Im gonna wind up pullin the trans out and finding that car came with an option for an aod

I never really had any time working on automatic transmissions always used a 5-speed but now that I have a girlfriend that likes the mustang she wants it to be auto..And auto's are more consistent at the track anyway, So any Identification help between the 2 would be great,I know the C-4 has 11 pan bolts but so does the AOD/E . Is there a car or truck that definetly has a C-4 in it?

Dig up a couple web photos to tell the difference.

An AOD has an integral bellhousing, a C4 has a separate one. An AOD has a throttle valve control cable. A C4 has a kickdown rod, as well as a vacuum modulator on the rear of the vb. Most C4's have the neutral start switch on the shift lever shaft on the drivers side of the case. It has a wire pigtail with a connector. An AOD has a 4 connector plug on the drivers side of the case, facing up, no pigtail.

Probably try and not get a C5, which is a late C4 with a fancier valve body and a lockup converter. It has a deeper bellhousing, and does not upgrade as directly with converters and valve bodies, etc.

C4's were last used in about 80 and early 81. Most after that are C5's.
