The engine idles rough and only makes decent power around 1500-2000 rpm. It bogs on acceleration from a stop, and is hesitant from hard acceleration from about 1000 rpm. It seems like the engine produces a lot of heat (it is a 390) but the temp gauge is not even half way. Is that fine? What should the idle fuel mixture limiters be set at for a good starting point?

thank you

Double check your timing before you make any adjustments to the carb (made that mistake before). I always take the carb needles in to where they are just bottoming out, not too much or you will flatten out the point of the end. Then come out 1 and a half turns, usually a good starting point. From there hook up a vacuum gauge and adjust the needles until the engine runs smoothly and you get a steady vacuum above 20 inches. I used to have an Autolite 4100 to tune, but got tired of the "dead spots" in the acceleration and bought a Holley. Lost about 25% in gas mileage but she hauls butt.

Ok, I will try that. I don’t know what I should expect for gas mileage I though 9 or 10 miles a gallon. But it seems to be really bad right now.
