How to use the MP3 feature.

Anyone use the MP3 player setup on the stereo? It's pretty damn cool, especially since I'm roadtripping to LA this weekend. One thing I noticed is that there is no artist or album in the text area... and there is a section for folders. I'm not very literate on creating MP3's, but I assume I can burn the disk with different folders to keep track of the albums... anyone know how I can do that?

Actually... I created folders, placed them in a main folder... then copied them to a CD. Simple.

I just dumped a bunch of songs in MP3 file format on to a CD. I was able to get 160 songs on to a single CD that way. If you put 6 CDs in the changer that are made that way you should get enough music to go anywhere without hearing the same song twice (unless you accidently select it twice like I did).
I'm sure that there are more efficient ways of doing this kind of thing, so I'll defer to the others, preferably those who don't still come across boxes of 8-Track tapes in their basements.

yeah you don't need any special software to make mp3 CD's. All you need is Windows LOL

Make as many folders as you want; just keep them to one level (no subfolders). If you don't have any artist/album info in the file properties on your pc, then you will have no artist/album info on your Shaker display. The initial display will show exactly as how you have the song named on your pc.

All you have to do is drag n' drop; just make sure you burn as a DATA CD, not a music CD. This preserves the mp3 format. If you do a music CD, it will try to convert them to the old .wav format.
Keep in mind that by default if will sort all the songs & folders in alphabetical order. If you want to maintain a certain song order you need to put a number in the beginning of the song title.

For instance, I ripped the new Black Stone Cherry CD as mp3 and this album now is just one of 6 folders on one of my CD's. I wanted to keep the same song order of the real CD; so I titled the first song "01 Rain Wizard" instead of just "Rain Wizard." Then I kept it going with "02 Backwoods Gold," "03 Lonely Train," etc.

It's nothing special, just treat this as you would if you were just moving/copying folders on your pc.

I love having a factory mp3 6-disc player! I have EVERY Motley Crue song EVER (including most of their demos) on 2 discs!!

windows is the operating system on your computer. you know, windows 95/98/200/ME/XP. its on about every personal computer out there, except apple and mac computers.

That's what I don't understand.
What program in windows are you using? itunes, by the way, works on both Mac and Windows.
You have to have some type of software to import and compress your music. "Windows" alone won't do it.

LOL = laugh out loud.

Windows is all you need. When you download music, it is already in mp3 format. All you do is Drag N Drop, and burn as a data CD. done deal.

Now if you want to rip songs from CD's you currently own, you need a program like Exact Auto Copy to convert them from .wav to .mp3. That's what I use.

Download from what? itunes, for example, does not download as an mp3. The ipod uses a different compression, I can't remember what. You would actually have to run that through another software program to convert it to an mp3.
I have an ipod with 1,400 or so songs. Most came from my CD collection and I had to use change my setting in itunes to burn them as mp3 on a cd. Again, importing into itunes for the ipod does not create mp3.

Most of my songs are songs I have ripped from my cd's and converted to mp3. *Not that I have ever done this*, but I've *heard* that LimeWire is a great program & source to download music. It works just like the original Napster, Soulseek, etc.

I may be wrong on this part, but I think you need to check into the exact format your ipod is playing. All the songs on my ipod are mp3's. And I always thought itunes downloaded as mp3 format???

If you did like me and did take songs from your own cd collection, then yes you do need a program to convert those songs from .wav to .mp3. I use Exact Auto Copy.

I can only tell you that I have read somewhere that the ipod does not use mp3. And I can tell you that when I have made CDs from itunes, they are not compressed as much as an mp3. You can change preferences in itunes to convert all songs to mp3. But again I am 99.999 percent certain that an ipod does not use mp3 files.
Of course, if your songs are already mp3 making cds are no problem. You do need the right software if they must be compressed. Thus, I stand by by first statement.

I just burned my first ever mp3 disc. I have ripped in mp3 format before. I use Windows Media Player 10 to rip my cds. I used Nero Smart Start to burn the mp3 disc. It couldn't have been any easier. 115 tracks in 11 folders and used up 699.8 of the 700mb on the cd-r. All the songs I checked on my Shaker1000 played fine and the folder/song text worked as well.

ahhh I gotcha now. So apparently, itunes is just about the only source out there that does not automatically download as mp3...
If you were downloading from ANY place other than itunes, then the "drag n drop" routine would be all you need to do.

You need to do one of the 2 following options:
1. find another source to download music
2. find a program to convert the files

The itunes is the kink in the chain for you...

Maybe, but I love my ipod and rarely even listen to my CD player. I installed an alpine head unit that controls the ipod. All the displays, controls, etc. are on the head unit. The ipod is inside my console and I never touch it (the head unit even turns it on and off) unless I am adding songs. I have 1,400 on it now and room for three times that many.
That's why I love itunes and my ipod.
I have burned a couple of cds with mp3. But it took some time.

A 700MB CD-R can hold 3-13 hours of MP3 songs depending on the bitrate for the song. With a 6-CD changer, you get a lot of songs. An iPod is technically superior but it's overkill for my application.

I see your point, but I can keep all of my music library in one place and never have to insert or remove anything. That's what I love about it. Trying keeping every cd you own regardless of how many songs one might have on it in your changer, gove box or console.
No matter what music I have in the mood for I have it with me.
My ipod does all that for me. I love it.
