I'm still trying to make up my mind on what to do for the exhaust on my '94 Cobra, but I've got an idea for what I think I want to do.

How would it sound if....I had stock cats, with 2 Flowmaster 40-series mufflers, and then really short tailpipes that stuck out in front of the rear wheels (side exit exhaust). Would the short tailpipes negatively affect the sound?

i think the sound would be restrictive with stock cats...it would still sound good but just a little quieter than with no cats....the only thing i would worry about is gettin an inspection sticker because my buddy has a 454 SS truck and he has the tail pipes dumping out infront of the rear tires and they wont give him a sticker....unless you know someone that can hook you up i say go for it....although it might look funny in the rear where it concaves for the pipes if there are none there

Buy an aftermarket H-pipe with cats then add your mufflers to the setup.

It'll sound a lot nicer (meaner) after that

Side-pipes are tough to do on a Fox-body without sacrificing ground clearance. Been there, done that; sounded great, looked okay, but trying to navigate around speed humps all day sucked.

Flowmaster 40's, in and of themselves, tend to drone. Couple that with even shorter-than-stock tailpipe tubing, and you're gonna hate it on the highway (unless you're running high enough gears to get you out of the drone range of RPM's). It won't be horribly loud, but louder than a cat-back Flowmaster setup.

Buy a pair of tailpipes of your preferred flavor for $100 to $150 - stainless, aluminized, or chrome (Dynomax, Flowmaster, or MAC) - and a pair of flow tubes ($40), and then plug on whatever pair of muffs you want. Clamping it together instead of welding it gives you the option of swapping in another brand later, if you don't like the results.

If you're determined to stick with Flowmasters, look into the Delta Series, which are a quieter and a bit less prone to drone; otherwise, any straight-through design muffs would be ideal (Magnaflows, Edelbrock RPM's, Dynomax UltraFlows, Hooker Maximum Flows, etc.) for great WOT sound and an idle with a burble, excellent flow rate, and a lack of drone.

He's not talking about a Fox. I think SN95's are not like that with side exhaust. At least I know there's ALOT of SN95 people running side exits .... and I haven't heard them complain about it yet.

And 6Speed, I don't see why that guy would have problems with inspections ... I mean, afterall, some vehicles come with side exhaust from the factory. (i.e. .... Lightning)

A stock '94 has 4 cats! Get those outta there A.S.A.P. Either get a mid pipe with 2 high flows cats OR an O/R X pipe, O/R H pipe, or Flowmaster D pipe. It will sound amazing.

well the reason is the 94 cobra didnt come with side exhaust from the factory...so inspection places would give you a hard time...i know its stupid but here in mass, they do a lot of stupid things.
