I broke the lugnut key, now what???

I have my new wheels sitting in my garage all ready to mount. So I try to loosen the lugs before putting them on the car. Of course I try the lock nut first. The idiot at the tire shop over tightened the lug nuts with an impact though. So of course it wasn't going anywhere. Logical next step is to break out the cheater bar, right? I guess not because that broke the key. So now here I am with four new tires/wheels and no way to mount them. I have the key ID tag but it says it can take 7-10 days to get a new key. Is there anyway to get around this? Does any parts store sell these keys? How about the dealership? ANY help would be appreciated.

Most places that change tires can get those locking lug nuts off; with or without the key. Call around and I'm sure you'll find a place that will take care of it.

you can do it acouple ways if you dont have the key. First you can weld a nut on the locking nut and just take a rachet and breaker bar to it. If you can weld do it yourself, if not, a shop wont charge that much to weld a nut on the locking nut. Or you can get the next smallest size of socket that will fit on it, take a hammer and force the socket on the locking nut. It will mess your socket up, but if you have craftsman tools you just return it and get a new socket. Once the socket is on the lugnut you just use a rachet and breaker bar to get it off.

The guy who put them on (idiot) seemed lost without it. He was digging through my trunk and glove box for almost 20 minutes before he found it in the center console. I just watched in amusement because I knew what he was looking for. Still can't figure out why he didn't just ask.

I wish I had broken it like that. The actual teeth are broken. It kind of twisted the other end of the key, not the nut part.

If it is the stock lock that come on factory wheels just go to your local dealer and they have a set that fit all the factory locks. Try that.

I knew there was a reason I wanted an air compressor for Christmas.

I went over to the local ford dealer today. I showed the parts guy the damaged key and he says "oh yeah, hang on I'll see if I have any thing that matches up" so I was like . So I'm waiting and waiting, and he finally comes back and says "you have to order those from the maufacturer, heres the number" :damnit:

I was thinking I might as well just order the darn thing and wait the couple days for it to be shipped. Otherwise I'll end up tearing it all up then really have no way to get it off. I'd drive it to the shop but theres no insurance on the car right now. O'well thanks for the help anyways guys.

When we lost the lugs up at work we just airhammered the nuts off there, trust me, that'll get them

you can also try a snap on or motorcraft lock lug set which you hammer onto the lug and it eats teeth into it and you can try to take it off, but normally thats only with impacts.
