You can keep the original keys only if you still have the code that Ford supposedly provided with the purchase of the car. At least that's what the dealership rep told me. Also, he made it sound like Ford won't have it either. I have not called yet though to verify his statement. Personally, I don't remember ever seeing the key code and I still have everything that I got when I purchased the car. I am still looking for that code. I am weighing my options but I can tell you this I won't be rekeying nothing. I will just have a different key for the ignition. Plus I have the door and alarm remote to open doors and the trunk. PM me if you find out something different.

I still have the code. The previous owner ( my grandpop ) gave it to me. I'll take a picture of it for you...
Can they make an ignition cylinder based on a key? I guess not...

What was the dealer price? That was what I explicitly said I was talking about.

I am cheap but try not to play games with locks. If an overseas made one look strudy, I might use it. Otherwise, I would use a Ford piece.

You're pretty close, depending on the break the parts counter gives you. I have the receipt for mine and list was $45.42 in 2002. No discount from this dealer, unfortunately.

One thing that everyone might want to remember is that in order to keep the same door and trunk locks, the original keys have to be in decent shape. The pattern of peaks and valleys on the keys is staggered. I think the first four and the sixth position are for ignition, and the fifth and last four are for the door locks. So if the key is about wiped out, you'll have to either replace all the lock cylinders, or have two keys for your car.

Nice info Scott! I never considered any issues with rekeying the new lock to the old key in terms of needing special codes or anything - did you encounter that? I have not had any issues in the past with other vehicles. I can see it on a key with a pellet in the key, etc, but not on a plain key.

Well, I'd say I got about 90% of what I wanted when I did it. New ignition switch works great. They got close on the door lock portions of the keys. The drivers side has more wear obviously, so it's easier to unlock, once you get the key in. lol It's a little tight. The passenger door and trunk take a wiggle to get the key to release the tumblers, but it all works with one key. If I had the tag shown above, it would probably be a non-issue.

I'll also join this group - I can take my key out of the ignition while it's running. Can't start the car without it, tho.

I think it has something to do with the shallow notches in the keys. i have a good master key that I make new keys off of. That key, and the ones cut from it, can't be pulled from the ignition. However, after using the key for several months I can then remove it while the car's running. Still works great in all the locks too.

My thing that spins with the ears on it actually falls off sometimes when i take my key out...then ppl look at me like my car is fallin apart... it's great!

I have they same problem although the prevous owners of my car have tried to solve the problem. I have 3 keys for my car. One for the trunk, drivers door, and ignition. I dont have a key that works on the passenger door. LOL
