Quite the contrary. I have L/T's and a catback on mine and think of it as loud and throaty without being obnoxious.

I'd describe it as "controlled power."

Noisy? Not at all. I hear the air in the headers and the engine growl (roar if you let it ), but not noisy at all.

If you want a quiet engine, you are driving the wrong car. You should drive a Mercedes if you want a quiet engine. If you want performance for the dollar, then you are in the right car, a Mustang GT.

I could be wrong but I don't think he is refering to the "good" noises. I think he means like clacking injectors and rattling belts. I haven't really noticed it before but now that Im thinking about it next time Im on the road I will listen closer.

Agreed. The VCT is a noisy setup to begin with. Ford warns its techs that "most operational noises are normal" with the 3V. Of course that covers their ass when something is wrong, how would you know? Run it till it blows then hope you can get the warranty honored for a new engine

I haven't noticed any odd noises coming from the engine, in fact, I think the engine sounds quite good in stock form. Granted, my last car was a 98 hp POS that sounded like a retarded monkey with lung problems, but still. My 07 GT sounds every bit as good in the drivers seat as my friend's 70 Nova SS.

I do however notice a slight clunk in the rear end if I'm not paying attention to a shift. I assume it's just the backlash in the rear gears, but it still surprises me sometimes. In general though, I think the car sounds great in stock form.... can't wait to get my intake and headers though!

I have the exact same problem. I put BMR lowers on the car and made the clunking in between shift so much louder. Now there is a pronouced gear whine. The 05s had this problem (gear whine) and I was a tech for Ford at the time. We were putting new guts in every rear that came in the door. It seems to me that Ford, instead of fixing the problem correctly, just put softer, more quiet bushings in the control arms to prevent this noise. Going to poly bushings has made the noise come back. I am reluctent to bring it in for the noise, because I know they will blame it on the control arms.

Let me ask you guys who think the 4.6 has a lot of mechanical noise this question. Are you comparing it to other vehicles based on cabin noise as you are driving down the road? Or are you comparing it to another vehicle while they are sitting side by side in a parking lot with the hoods up? I'm just wondering if the people who think it's a noisy motor are used to driving non performance oriented cars that have a lot more sound insulation. I noticed that maxima (topic starter) has an '04 GT, are you comparing the 3V to the 2V in your car? I am just curious here, not trying to flame anyone. I've never owned a quiet car such as an Accord or such, my DD for the last 8 years has been a 98 F-150 with the 4.2 V-6/MT combo. I can assure you that my 06 GT is much quieter and less mechanical sounding than that setup (oh yeah, the exhaust sound is much improved too)!
