i have an 02 GT with K&N, steeda pullys, steeda tri-ax, o/r x-pipe, flowmaster 2 chamber, and a predator tune with 38k on my motor. the owner of a 97 cobra wants to race me, and supposedly all he has done is lite exhaust work and computer work. his motor is rebuilt with 40.0 miles on it. the driver isnt that great, he normally drives a v6 stang, and i think im a pretty good driver. how well should i do? or should i not waste my gas? thanks for your time.

I say go for it! It sounds like you should be able to beat him on the dig, but past experience says he will be able to reel you in. Who knows, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

He'll probably beat you near the end but it most likely will be close

I chased a model cobra like that before and I felt if we had lined up I would've gave him a pretty good run, and the engine mods of done have given me no hp gain. I'm pretty sure that cobra was stock though. I think you should at least try to see.. I think it would be a pretty sweet race.

What's so embarrasing about losing to a Cobra?

Your GT is mostly stock so if you lose BIG DEAL. I am curious how the race goes. Let us know what happened.

And if he wants to race with 40 miles on a rebuild... well I think you might more than win... You might make him rebuild his rebuild...

if i added 4.10's to my arsenal, or even 3.73's, how would that help my odds?

Torque isn't really the issue, he will most likely have about 30-40hp over you stock for stock. With your mods you likely pulled that gap closer and have more torque then him. If it's from a roll....Cobra, a dig...You'll end up seeing who wins, possible for either one.

You've got nothing to lose, it's not embarrassing to race and lose. It's embarrassing to be afraid and stand down.

GOTCHOPSTICKS,

Go for it! First of all no matter who is racing, there is always a winner and always a loser. Not standing up to the challange is even worse than losing. (In my opinion). Racing for me is fun no matter if I win or lose (winning is better, but there is ALWAYS somebody faster). Last fall I pulled up to a stoplight here in Chicago, and the next thing I know a Ferrari 360 Modena pulls up next to me. We look at each other and nod, rev, wait for green and BAM. I got a good jump on him, and pulled through first, as soon as I hit second he passed me and we both stayed in it until about 85mph. I lost, but it was fun as hell.

Second thing, I have a 97 GT and my best friend has a 98 Cobra. We race all the time. When we first started racing each other, I had a chip and a cold air intake. I would get him through first, and the beginning of second. Then, he put on a catback and cold air kit and I put in a plenum spacer. Still the same.

Your car should have about 50-70HP over mine, especially with your mods. It will probably be a close race, but no matter what the result just have fun. And if he does beat you, then you can start thinking about the next mod.....

From a roll, I stuck door to door with a 97 Cobra in my 02. From about 30 to about 100, then I was done...let's not be stupid, people.
