Today I dropped my car off w/my friend to swap out the Motorsport gears I've had in my trunk for a month for the Motive off road noisy set that have been in there since February.

I have done everything to a car that can be done to include engine, electrical, transmission, bodywork, paint, interior re-upoholstery, and chassis work.

Despite all of my technical capabilities, for whatever reason ( insert because I'm stupid here), I cannot and do not posses the technical capabilities to set up a set of rear end gears. Despite trying, I can get the backlash right but the contact pattern is s hit, I get the pattern right, and then the backlash is all wrong. (I've thrown stuff across the garage out of less frustration)

So I know when to say when.

I sold my golf clubs. (because I suck) The object being to get the "lowest" score,...go figure.
I quit drag racing. ( because I suck) Something about 140 degree track temps and broken parts.
I quit my Circus trapeze act. ( because I sucked) People didn't like getting dropped.
I quit spreading the gospel. ( because I sucked) I have a problem w/ organized religion.
I quit my acting career. ( because I sucked) Robert Deniro stole the lead from me in Raging Bull,....the prick.
I quit whispering to dogs. (because I sucked) I have a problem whispering.
AND...
I cannot rebuild a rearend. (because I SUCK) Requires more technical expertise than I posses.

I have been tolerating this god awful racket since the Motive gears were installed in February.
I took them back to my friend, he made an adjustment, yet the noise continued to persist. I called the rep at Motive and he told me that they would NEVER be quiet,..that they were in fact a set built for off road 4WD usage, where gear noise was never a design consideration.

So before I decided to try and sell the car (which I no longer am trying to do), I bought a set of Motorsport 3.73's, w/ the intent of having them swapped someday. Today was that "Someday".

So I drive the thing home tonight, (w/ my bass ackward rear mounted A/C system busting it's ass to try and cool the car in 105 degree heat) and I notice,.....NOTHING.
No howl, no whine, no groan, no moan.
For the first time,...it's dead quiet back there. I can hear the tires on the pavement, I can hear the thumping of the exhaust, I can hear every note from my high dollar Panasonic Sirius tuned audio system.
(remember,...I have the mega expensive, double secret, patent pending, MADMIKE endorsed, 4 muffler full length exhaust system on my car, and words like Drone do not exist.

Am I happy w/ a gear change that didn't make the car faster or slower?

Damn Skippy.:nice:

Nice Mike. Fixing the most simple issues can sometimes make the biggest difference.

If it's any consolation, I have no intention of setting up my rear end myself. It's off to a tranny shop for that.

Maybe that was the annoyance tickling the "sell it" nerve in the back of your brain.

It was the only thing that I could say was annoying about driving the car, but it had nothing to do w/ me trying to sell it.

But yes, It did make the car much nicer to drive. Now I have no reference for how fast I'm going. I had gotten used to the sound my "whine-o-meter" made around 70-73 MPH, but now that the noise is gone. I had to check up at 80+ more than a few times last night on the way home.

Naah man......it's no consolation that you have to take your I.R.S. rear ended, 76 mm water cooled, ball bearing turbo charged, obsessively smoothed engine bay, bare metal stripped for a year w/o rusting future magazine car to the trans shop for your rear gears.

I don't know why though:nonono:

Uh Oh. Madmike is mad. Yes I am asking. I know it says you dropped it off with a friend but I wanted to know if you had a hand in reinstalling the new set as well. I wanted to know if you could see a difference between the two and if the install was smoother with the non-offroad gears.

Uh Oh. Madmike is mad
I do not get "mad". I can be easily annoyed though.
Which brings me back to my question......After all of the self-deprecating I did in the original post, detailing the drop off part of having my friend install the gears that I can't,...did you ask me if I was the one installing the gears?

Well, it is obvious I did not read your original post thoroughly enough, and also, quite clear you would rather keep pointing that out instead of humoring me and answer my silly, dumb (inserted description of your choice here) question. Since I have obviously annoyed you, and why would anyone want to do that, I will restrain myself from viewing your posts and further from commenting on them.

Hey don't take offense.

Look at it this way:

You walk up to me, introduce yourself,...and proceed to tell me some small story (that takes about,...Ohhhh 3 minutes to tell)

I appear to be listening to you, ( At least I'm looking at you, but you can't really tell me if I'm actually really listening to you)....Anyway, when you get done, I say I'm sorry,....I wasn't listening to the first part of your story, would you mind telling that part over?

Would you get annoyed at that, or humor me and tell it all over again?

Now, compared w/ standing there and listening to somebody talk,.. (where there is no way to review what was said if you weren't paying attention) all anybody has to do here for clarification is to re-read what was already written. Am I making a mountain out of a molehill? Should I have actually told that part of the story over so as not to appear an ass?

Pricks gotta keep on prickin'

I'm not offended, I just take note.

Maybe I should have made my question more clear from the get go. As I said before, I see you dropped off your car but I did not know if you stuck around to help out or to see how someone well versed in rear end (hehe) does it. You mentioned doing it yourself before and while dropping your car off might mean you left the business, I wasn't surem

I like to watch any work being done on my car. If the mechanic is so inclined I also like to ask them questions so I learn something as well.

After being married for 11 yrs I find most my verbal conversations are short and to the point. I like to pick up on key words and cut the other crap out. In this case, I chose to overlook your golfing profession as well as your gospel preaching days.

I don't think you are a prick, maybe a little grumpy, but to each his own.

Well we're not playing fair when you go back, and edit your original posts, adding content "for the sake of clarification". If you would've said all of what you said after you added to your original comment, then I'd have answered you cordially.
