I keep on shearing off studs any help?

I have a 8.8 4-lug with 31 spline axles c-clip eliminators and a spool 3 times in two summers i'v sheared the studs off while turning. Any help on what may be wrong or what kind of hardware I should be using? First it was the supplied 3 inch studs that came w/ the axles and then it was a set of grade 5's and now the 316L stainless ones what should I do?:notnice:
 
What size tire are you running, I don't have a spool but my trac lok is packed as tight as possible so I get no slip, and I have had no problems with studs, I run the 3 inch moroso studs, do you stay on the gas around corners?
 
I run Nitto NT555 R's 275/40/17 on Cobra R wheels 17 x 9. What do you mean stay on the gas? Not really I'm not whippin sideways all the time if that's what your asking.

He might be implying that on the street you need to keep the tires spinning a little bit to keep one from grabbing harder than the other one.

I'd say ditch the spool and get an eaton posi, keep the spools for a track only car, you may be on here soon telling us that you broke an axle around a turn
 
Why exactly are you using a spool?
I don't see the point in a spool on a car you drive around on the street, and the fact that you use nitto's instead of a better tire suggest that you really aren't that concerned about traction anyway. Not that the nitto's are a bad tire, but they are a good street tire, not a race tire, and spools are for race cars, so...

There are serious forces at work when you go around a turn with spool, at some points one tire may want to turn 2-3 times faster than the other, then you have the weight and momentum of a 3000lb car trying to demand it happens, somethings got to give.

Yeah nittos are kind of like the hey i got some sticky street tires.Not hey i got some mean gripping power holding M/T's lol.

Well i had the same problem when I got my 15x10 welds with 275/50/15s nittos and I didnt have a spool on my car. Then I went to the morroso 3inch studs and that helped a little. But what i started noticeing was the lugs were backing out, so what I would do was torque the lugs down to 90lbs every time I took the car out. Sometimes they would be loose and somtimes they wouldent.Its weird because now I dont have that problem any more, but i still check the lugs once a week. You could probably get away with it doing it every other day. I think mybe since there new rims they just need seat in. I hope this helps

The logical solution is that the spool is causing them to break there skip, sayin that new rims have to "seat in" is about the most illogical thing you could say. Spools arent meant to turn, have you ever seen a car with a spool do a tight low speed turn(like say pulling into a parking spot)? The tire will actually look like its trying to skip or hop. Im sure thats not stressfull to the studs at all.

Lug nuts could also be an issue, i had a friend with a malibu that had a wheel fall off cause he had the wrong angle on the conacal lug with his tq thrusts. In your case, i'm still saying spool
 
i agree with the spool. get rid of it for street use. i had a jeep with a powertraxx locker...which is supposed to disengage around corners but some times it didnt. when you go around a corner with a spool the outside wheel is spinning the same speed as the inside wheel. which will stress the **** out of your axles and studs.

Suggest taking the spool out if you street drive much, especially with sticky tires. You have practically set the axle to fail something, studs, splines, or something like that.

Theoretically, the clamping force on the lugs should allow the wheel to be held and turned by friction with the hub, not shear on the lugs, but obviously, there is shear on the lugs.

Keeping the proper torque on the lugs would help, but most likely wont stop the failure. Not sure that even a 5 lug setup would help.
 
Wow some of the people on here really have no freaking idea what they are talking about huh. Stop anwsering questions you have no idea about. I have ran a differential twice now once a auburn pro posi and a eaton and blew them both to pieces. Professionally installed mind you. The thing about the wrong lugnuts sounds more feasible. I found that a couple of the lugnuts on that side did not have the right chamfer on them, maybe causing the problem. Also you shouldn't be running the 3" studs unlesss your running Welds because you don't have the spacing in the center of the rim to use all of the stud, I already sheared those last year running the cobra wheels. About the traction thing i'll be the one to decide how I want to put my 500 hp to the ground. I'v already tried several suspension setups and welds w/ E.T. Drags and only hooked up slightly better than with the Nitto's. Besides the fact I know about a half a dozen people who run spools on the street with no problems.

Wow I guess they don't know do they? Oh wait, they aren't the ones shearing off axles studs every summer are they? The advice you are getting is correct, spools are not meant for the street. If you have a street strip car that needs spool-like strength then a Detroit locker is what you should be using. Hopefully when you break an axle you aren't going down the highway at 70 and injure someone else.

I wouldn't even use grade 5 studs to build a swingset, let alone to hold my wheels on, grade 5 is ''garbage'', and I have not seen 316l studs before, what brand or part # on those?
