For around only $300 CAD, I can get a 351W lower intake, 91 5.0L upper intake, stock Mass airflow meter, wire harness, computer, fuel railes, etc...

I was going with a new RPM airgap intake and a new Holly double pump carb. Which together would be way more expensive than that $300 EFI deal. Plus I won't need to change my gas tank pickup, or change fuel lines.

But what else do I need? Do I need to change the distributer (stock this 351 was a 2bbl and Duraspark II system)? I take it, the wire harness is all the same, I would just need to change the computer? Would I need a 351 computer or would the 5.0L computer work?

Thanks for any info you may provide.

i did the same drove the car 1000 miles, liked it, decided i needed more power, put in a biger cam, wore out a dremel on the heads, threw it back together. boy was i pissed. 7 miles per gallon no power. bought a mass air kit and new injectors(800 dollars so far),ran a hell of a lot better, gas mileage went to 5 in town 10 on the highway. 2 tanks of gas later i started thinking well i need a better intake and fuel pump, thought some more, im gonna need a different tb and mass air sensor as well (1000 more dollars). so i went upstairs grabed an old intake and dist, found a holley for $100. 5 hours later i started my car and drove it around - big grin on my face. gas milage shot up to 10/19.
that was 2 years ago. took it to the track only once and pulled a 12.95 @ 106.

upgrading fuel injection isnt so bad, starting from scratch isn't worth the money.

btw its a 302 not a 351 the car used to have a 3.8 in it

12.95 is pretty good. But if you had the whole stock EFI setup, how could it take up more fuel than carb and have less power? I'm still learning this but if I see too many horror stories I will stick to my oringinal idea which is CFI.

LOL So basically unless I find a 5.0L donner car for me to rob parts from, an EFI swap will cost a fortune? I thought (which could be more than wrong mind you) all I needed were:

Lower 351 truck intake
Upper 5.0HO intake (assuming it will fit)
Intake gaskets
Fuel rail (5.0, need to add longer high pressure fuel line to make it wider)
24# injectors (should be enough?)
Throttle body (would the stock 5.0 be okay?)
Mass air sensor (would the stock 5.0 be okay?)
Air intake tubing (stock 5.0 should work?)
Complete engine wire harness (from 5.0 okay?)
ECU from 5.8L or 5.0L
O2 sensors, + whatever other sensors it may need???
5.8L EFI distributor
I would need another coil I guess as well?
Better intank fuel pump (what a 290???)
Fuel regulator?
Cone filter

And for carb I only need:
Intake
Carb
5.8L CFI distributor (got that)
Air cleaner assembly + filter
Change tank pickup
Fuel lines
Mechanical fuel pump - that's what I got on my engine anyway?

I can basically get everthing on the EFI list for cheaper or around the same price as the CFI setup. Unless I need some kind of piggy back ECU setup, and new intakes due to the lower + upper not matching, I will stick to carb and buy all the EFI things here and there later on. Because I really do want to supercharge this car eventually and I am not sure about a roots type blower that would put my carb almost outside my hood lol.

Any help is very usefull because I am about to get everything very soon either way (CFI or EFI). Personally I prefer the looks of carb and this is not going to be a daily driver.

With your set up stock is not ok. It will work ok, but you may end up with an engine that has a lot more potential than what you are getting out of it, plus you may have Idle problems. I am not sure if the intake will fit. 24# injectors should do the trick until the Supercharger comes around. Seems like a long list for the EFI, but your right, I can not think of anything else you would need but stock wont do it. Thats going to push the $$ up quite a bit. The mechanical pump will be fine for now but with the supercharger later you will need more gas.
There is a supercharger kit to fit under the hood of a carbed stang. Not sure how it will fit on top of the 351 though.

Hehe thanks for the replies, much needed as I need to call the EFI guy this afternoon lol.

I am getting a good cam and ported heads for this engine (as well as long tube headers) so it won't be 100% stock. I guess the stock 5.0 TB would be like adding a 500cfm carb to my engine rendering it a sort of useless 351. I checked the prices of better TB and larger injectors, just a few words: OMG. And knowing me, I will end up needing a better flowing intake so a new upper + lower intake would be put on list which adds up quite a bit.

You know maybe I should have added that I want to at least hit 300HP fwhp for this engine. I know that, in stock form (2bbl carb), this engine has 185HP and 315lb-ft of torque. Some good flowing heads, better CR, intake, 4bbl carb, headers, aggressive cam, etc.. will take me close to 300HP (if not more). I guess going the EFI route would mean; new TB, intakes, etc?

I saw that in one of my old Mustang rags. I wonder if that still exists and what kind of crazy carb you'd need for that? Maybe it would clear a CobraR hood with a low profile air-cleaner.

Actually takes a plane old carb. I saw it on a car a few years ago at Gulf Coast Mustang SHow in Pensacola. Unfortunately he was in my class, I gat spanked!!! Of course I was driving mine everyday.. It is a nice piece of work. The carb actually sits inside a box so all the pressure goes through the carb. Looked very good to, the guy had the whole motor polished up. He said it ran great but I dont remember all the details. I knwo where some of that EFI stuff is for pretty cheap but OMG cheap for that is not cheap!!!

Thanks again for all the replies. I think I will buy the EFI parts (for that price, I am not loosing much anyway), I do have 4 months to find everything, if it doesn't work out I will find a used carb and intake for the time being. It is more expensive but EFI will resolve future headaches since there is a stupid rumor (unfounded - but still) of emissions testing in my province.

I found a good topic on here with an extensive list of things to do. http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=367882
