I need a muscle car sound

I'm putting exhaust on a 70 fastback. I thought "FLOWMASTER" for a long time, but they kind of whistle and don't do it any justice. I need something throaty, loud, and "muscular" any advice?

I have flows and love them, but if they are not your cup of tea then try spin tech. Fair warning though, I have heard they are LOUD.

I love how my Dynomax's sound! Even on long highway trips was no problem talking or thinking, yeat they bark when you nail full throttle.

WOW! if you haven't done it yet, go to spin tech's site and LISTEN to those mufflers. they have sound clips on some cameros, a vette, and some others. I have to say, even a chevy can sound good with those. too rich for my blood tho.

I've been noting a lot of discussion of mufflers lately, and everyone seems to be looking for the right "sound" by way of a muffler. But I can't help but wonder if folks are completely aware that the sound of an exhaust note is as much (if not more so) a function of how the motor is built, especially dependent on compression ratio, cam desighn, timing, & profile, and exhaust manifold/headers design. We've all heard late model cars/trucks with Flowmasters that rumble and bark, yet we've all also probably heard others that sound flat or just a louder version of anemic.

Ultimately, if you're looking for something "throaty" like say a new Mustang or Corvette or Camaro, then compression and roller cams with fairly aggressive profiles and timing are probably more critical than the particular muffler being used. Heck, all of those cars had a bit of a "throaty" sound straight from the factory, even before any exhaust modification. Most mods that are done actually end up amplifying rather than changing the innate sound of the motor.

I know this doesn't directly answer your question, but I hope it does help with your expectations. Compare apples to apples (i.e. don't judge any muffler unless you hear it on a car with a motor built similarly to your own).

good point, Buddha. The thing is, I am still in college, so my plans are a bit larger than my pocketbook. What I mean is that I plan on putting some exhaust on now and rebuilding the engine in a coupla years. I just don't want to slap on a muffler that sounds good at idle and starts to whistle when I get into the gas. Thanks for all the advice guys.

Keep in mind that the size of pipe used, type of bends (mandrel, crush, crimp), number of bends, overall length, and if you have an X, H, etc will all affect the sound.

I've never heard of Flowmasters "whistling", but I guess sound would be as subjective a looks. I like the way my Flowmasters sound. I am switching (one day) to the Delta Flows to get rid of any drone at freeway speeds.

I also have Flowmaster's and am having a hard time imagining them making a 'whistling' sound. what makes you think they would whistle? My car is loud and sounds bad as hell!

There is a great article in this June's issue of Mustang & Fords magazine that compares 13 different mufflers on the same Mustang, I showed it to my buddy (w/69 camaro of all things) and it helped him decide.

Also take into consideration what DarkBuddha said about your cam, headers, and etc. I get a lot of questions from local guys about the way my car sounds and I just tell them it is the combination that gives it its sound.

OK, sorry about the flowmaster thing. I just expected something different. I must say, I heard some spin techs on a 70 stang with a 351 cleveland, and WOW! Those are definately for me! What about straight 2.5 inch aluminum pipes to spin techs, then one bend on each side before they exit in front of the rear wheels from 3 inch aluminum tips?

Thanks, I got the wheels & tires from Discount Tires, although I am planning on getting rid of them and upgrading to something bigger.

Oh and the Spintech mufflers that you are thinking about are one of the loudest mufflers in that comparison I mentioned above.

Are you working on a Cleveland?
IMO each engine family has a different sound.
Therefore if you are working on another, you would not get that sound. Not to mention the other variables like cam and compression.

I was thinking about going with 2.5" all the way back to some single chamber flowmasters myself. Figured it would sound pretty dang loud.

They suck

My buddy and I designed some mufflers can anyone host a file for me??? Or know how I can host it somewhere??? It would be a video file so you guys can experience the homemade mufflers first hand.

Gp has a good point on the pipe size and make ups.
I run the Magna flow with2 1/2 in from stock manifolds with H connector to 3 in tips on mine.
Has good sound with the exception of around 45-55 mph,
Gets a little loud inside But mellows right out at higher speeds.

Of course the Other Drivers sort of Freak when I pass them at 75 and all they get is a Growl.

I've got 3 chamber flowmasters, 3in from the header to the muffler, then dumping out before the axle. It's loud. I'm looking for a good way to quiet it down a bit, but not so much that it sounds ridiculous. Not sure if the best way would be to take the exhaust up and over the axle or just change the muffler to a magnaflow... or ??
