Hey fellas. I'm new here, and looking into buying a 97 GT. I was wondering what you guys thought of for $2,000? It has 160,000 good motor, no smokes, rebuilt 50,000 miles ago w/ forged internals (but 75-shot nitrous was used in it); tranny and clutch was rebuilt/replaced 20,000 miles ago; body and interior (leather) is about 7/10. Drives well and Clean carfax too. Comes w/ 17 in. polished bullitt wheels. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If the exterior is nice I would say its not to bad of a price I would think. Espeically with a fordged bottom end. PI update yet or not?
It sounds like a very good deal to me. 
$2000 for a running GT.... hell, I would buy it just to flip it. I would want to know exactly what was done to the engine. What kind of crank, rods, pistons and where was it done? Having forged parts put in makes me think they would have done head work or put on PI heads. Mabey someone on here can tell ya what to look for to be able to tell. I am a 4V guy so dont know a whole bunch about the 2V engines. But a fresh motor and trans is a plus in my book. 
I would listen for TOB noise, drivelin clunk (does it have gears?) and see how it sounds on a cold start up. I would also pull each plug (when engine is cold) and inspect them to see how each cylinder is running and to make sure none are stripped out.
Also slip the clutch a bit from a start and see if it pulses or is on/off grabby. That will let ya know if the flywheel is warped. Check the rad support to make sure its not tweaked and also check the torque boxes to make sure they are not torn.

All the work were done by PSI motorsports there in Texas. Everything seems to be in good condition. The odometer did stop working in 2003 though. Cold start-up is good. tranny was rebuilt 3 yrs. ago along w/ new clutch.
Anyone else willing to help me out here? This is my 1st mustang ever.. please any help would be great.

I don't really have a budget to follow. It's not an issue. I just ran into this deal, it's my neighbor's car. Sounded like a good deal so I looked into it. I just don't want to blow 2 G's into something that's not going to be worth the money later on. That's pretty much my issue, i want someone's opinion specially from someone that has a mustang.
As I had said before, a running GT with that mileage and rebuild level I would buy in a heartbeat cause I know at worst case I could flip it and make a couple grand.

You are right also man, thanks for your .2 cents. He's selling it because he just got an '05 GT. So the '97 is just collecting dust and wasting garage space.
Anyone else..? What do you guys think of '97 GT's in general? How about the 4.6 motor? Any complaints? thumbs-up? or thumbs-down?

Second. Any used car, and no doubt a 15 year old car is going to need some money in it one way or the other I don't care how good of care the PO took of it. In my book, (and I am not rich) this is the hobby aspect of the older Mustang world. The message boards would not be here if that were not the case.
As far as the car goes. If it is in good over-all shape like your post suggest it sounds like an ok deal to me. I paid $3,250.00 for my 96' GT convertible. Had a new top and I just re-painted the front and rear bumper covers because they had small clear coat peel.
I think that's a good price for the car. $2K is almost nothing for a running car and it sounds like you could probably part the thing out for more than that. I'd want to see receipts for the motor/trans work, but otherwise, I'd go for it. You could spend $4k on a car and still realize it needs a bunch of work. At least with this one, the initial price is low enough that another $1k in maintenance /mods isn't that much total.

I'd buy it for 2k especially with a forged bottom end.
I bought a 98GT this time last year with 144k on it for an even 3,000, and it was a decent deal here in NY.
Worst case scenario, you could definitely get your money back... JMO.

The tanny work was legit. I went to the shop and asked for a historical and it's true. The motor work was done by the owner. But you're right, $2k is almost nothing for a running car. Thanks.
