I have a '96 Mustang GT with the automatic AODE transmission. It slips pretty bad and a guy I know has one from a '93 Lincoln Mark VIII. He says it's the same transmission, I'd just like to have confirmation that these are indeed the same transmissions.

I would be skeptical about this working. For starters, the 96 Mustang has a 4R70W. The 4R70W is an electronically controlled transmission. This places increased importance to the electrical compatibability between the transmission and the PCM.

Note, if the 93 motor is a OHV 5.0, it will not bolt up to a modular transmission. The 96 is going to require a modular compatabile transmission.

No they will not swap. Just look at how many starter bolts your car has and the trans he has. one will have 2 and the other will have 3.

He said it was mated with a 32v 4.6. Oh and the starter bolt pattern uses 3 holes

I see. Well I'm getting a killer deal on it (free after trading a few things) so if it doesn't work, I can always sell it and make a profit.

It appears that all Mark VIII's (93+) and all modular MN12's (94+) all had the 4R70W. You might want to check over at tccoa as those guys are more likely to know about year-to-year 4R70W compatibility issues.

If it really is an AOD-E then you might want to hit up some Panther boards as Crown Vics, etc. had the 4.6L with both AOD-E (92-94) and 4R70W (95+).

Well I got the transmission. I haven't ran any of the numbers on it yet but regardless if it works or not I got it for free so I can always sell it for profit. I'll post up some info on it when I get out there to check it out.

I snapped some pictures of the numbers. From what I've gathered so far, it is indeed a 4R70W. I didn't realize there were so many different 4R70Ws. I haven't compared with the numbers on mine yet simply because I can't get to them with the catalytic converters. Is there a list anywhere of compatible 4R70Ws that will work in a mustang?
