Compression is a little low, but should be ok. I know you said you timed it to 10°. But I would at least verify the balancer hasnt spun any. You may have more or less timing than you think if it has.

Ok, that sounds like a good start. The noise goes away to a degree if i run it with my spout removed, but my power is down. How would I tell if my balancer has spun?

If I get #1 cylinder to tdc the balancer dial should be at 0, or am I off track with that?
Thanks

compression numbers are low, but within a few % of each other so nothing to get too concerned about. I assume you have some miles on this thing no?

Yes, you could say that.. Lol
I just got it a month ago, it is (was) a train wreck in a way. The forum has been absolutely fantastic to me, I really appreciate the help and patients twords me.
I think I may have huge timing issues causing my mystery noises.I just took about 5 degrees out of it and it seemed to have quieted down quite a bit. I have it warming up right now, and I'm going to go for a quick test ride.I will report back in a couple

No change in noise or very little. I have rough off iddle response with taking 5* out. I'm gonna mess with it more tomorrow, I might be doomed lol.
Ya know what ,it (the noise) kind sounds like a diesel engine in a way. I'm going to try the screwdriver trick tomorrow and see if I can't pinpoint it, but I would really like to verify that I am timed correctly. what's the exact procedure for starting from scratch? .
And how do I tell my balancer has spun?
when I first got the car the upper manifold was cracked. it was a gt40 upper and lower, I replaced it with a new to me upper and lower gt40.I marked my rotor position when I pulled my distributor, when I re stabbed it I lined up my mark but my TFI is in a way different location than before. I would like to start from scratch with the timing and see what happens.
Thanks everyone, I really don't want to let lose the war. I don't mind loosing a battle but I want to win the war..

If it helps (or matters) I just discovered I have a non H.O. firing order according to the diagram I found on the forum. I tried running the wires to the ho order, it ran but ran rough. I put them back to the non HO order and its smother, but its still not right.
I'm at a loss here...I also cannot use mustang 5.0 sparkplugs, they don't fit. I had to use Exploror type plugs, Autolite #2545.
I'm going to try and restab my distributor from scratch with #1 @ tdc and see what happens. I still may have a timing issue?

Correct, with the piston at TDC. The timing pointer should be close to 0 on the balancer.

Kinda have an issue there. If you truly have a Non HO cam in the car, then you have injectors firing at the wrong time. Injectors will fire based on the 13726548, and spark timing is firing 15426378.

Really, how do I even start to figure this mess out....anything to look for as a telltail sign. My plug wires go in the non ho order for sure.

The fact that it runs decent with the non ho and runs crappy with the ho firing order is enough of a clue. But to answer your question...... You could remove the spark plugs and see which cylinder starts compression first. If cylinder 3 starts first, its an HO, If 5 starts first, its Non HO. The correct fix is to replace the cam with one with the HO firing order.

OK, thanks for the info. I will double check my firing order and see what cylinder builds compression 1st .

Just to clarify, its which cylinder that starts compression after number one cylinder hits compression. So start with number, then see if 3 or 5 makes compression first. It will be easier to stick a piece of paper towel in the plug hole or 3 and 5, and see which one blows out first.

I did the paper towel trick and it was #5 after #1, then #3 that made compression first. Just to confirm, I marked my distributor where each plug wire would go. I watched the rotor (as I had my finger over the plug hole), #1 made compression, then #5 made compression directly after #1, then #3 a little after.
Now do you think my injectors are firing at the rong time? What tells the injectors to fire, the computer I'm guessing? Could I switch the injector plugins around and see if it's my problem. Also will a HO cam put me back in the proper order?
Thanks...

I think I'm going to borrow a noid light and see if the injectors are firing at the right times. Is that a good starting point for this?

The computer tell the injectors the order to fire. I wouldn't waste money on the noid light just for that.

Ok, glad I didn't go yet,lol.
Should I try switching the number 3 & 5, and the number 4 & 7 injector harness? My computer it a DZ1( pic of my computer from when I was fixing it work your help liljoe07).
I assume its a stock mustang computer?

Or should I get the proper cam and put it in, and if so will that correct my firing order?
Thanks...
