I replaced the stock head unit (am/fm cassette, premium sound) in my 93 GT, with an Alpine am/fm, CD player. Circuit city installed it with and instalation wiring kit. It wouldn't work at first, then they hooked up a signal wire to the factory amp. It worked great for a few days, and now it turns on and everything seems to be working, but I don't have any sound except some faint crackling noises. I was told by a few people that an aftermaket head unit has to much power for the factory amp. I was also told you need to remove the factory amp and by pass it with a jumper of some sort when installing an aftermarket head unit. I've checked all the connections and fuses. Can any one help me?

Well the easiest route to go is take it back to circuit city and ask them whats wrong, and tell them to fix it. Hard to say exactly what the problem is, but I know a lot of people who replace the stock head unit without replacing the stock amp, so that probably not the problem, however it could be. For starters though I would ask/tell the people at circuit city to fix it. If they refuse, just pull a "can I see your manager" because if you paid for installation, the thing should work for more than a week.

Thanks, I took it back to circuit city. The head unit was fine. The factory amp is blown. Circuit city does sell a jumper to by pass the factory amp. MeTra Part# 70-5513 After checking with quite a few other sources, I found that the aftermarket head units put out too much power for the factory amp. Circuit city looked up the installation in their books and found they had installed it incorrectly.
