My starter had been misbehaving in the past with hard starts. I thought that this was because the bum who tuned my car had locked out my timing at 28 degrees was making things difficult on my starter. AFter the timing computer went in, the car was starting ok but subsequent starts had been difficult and now I can no longer start my car. It simply wont turn over. I get 1 second of the engine trying to fire but then nothing, only the sound of something spinning. I think that this is the starter gear disengaging from the flywheel.

The problem is that my car is in my garage and my garage is under my house so the driveway is uphill, thus making removal difficult. Is there any way to start my car with a bad starter.?

If you have a Manual trans you could try having your friends push it when its in neutral then get up to like 5mph put it into 1st and try to start it fast. Thats what my dad use to do to his old toyota truck it had 690k miles on it and the battery just died out.. lol

:D Did you look to see if the starter bolts were tight? I don't see how the total timing setting would affect how easy it is to start your engine. Even if it did, the starter simply wouldn't spin. :D Don't make me come over there!!!:D

the timing was locked out at 28 degrees (28 initial, 28 total) and I had read that having locked out timing could make for some difficult starts and in any event was hard on your starter. I am not sure that the bolts are on tight or not. I cannot get under the car to check. The dimensions of my garage allow for the mustang and not much else. There is about 6 inches between the passenger's side and the wall, 1 inch between the front bumper and the wall, and 2 inches between the rear bumper and the garage door.

This is an auto tranny btw

It sounds like the bendix drive is going bad, this is the gear assembly on the armature. These are available as a separate part and are not terribly difficult to replace. Not sure if you will be able to find this part near you, but most part stores have them available.

If you can pull it out of the garage.. look at it see if bolts are tight if they are pull the starter out and take it to a kragen or pepboys they all have a starter tester there for you to use. If its bad buy a high torq one. Much better then a stock.
