I took off one of my valve covers to see what was going on after yesterday's events. Facing the engine it is the left bank. The first and last pairs (1st and 4th cylinders) of lifters and pushrods looked fine. The second pair over the second cylinder looked alright, could use adjustment but nothing serious. The third pair over the third cylinder is where the real stuff was. One lifter I could move with my finger it was so loose. The other lifter was rotated at about a 45 degree angle to the side and wasn't even touching the valve spring it was so far to the side. Worst of all is that the pushrod was still connected to the lifter and angled in all it's glory. I don't know if the pushrod was bent or just knocked off the crank in some way (don't even know if it's possible). Well that certainly clears things up.

First of all, what you're referring to as the "lifter" is actually the rocker arm. The lifter is the part that rides the cam lobe under the pushrod. If they're bent that bad, better pull your intake and check out the lifters one by one ( don't mix them up, they HAVE to be replaced back in their original holes , if you're reuseing the cam. If either of these two lifters is worn down on their bottoms, then the cam is screwed, time to get a new cam, lifters and pushrods.

I took off the rocker arm that was rotated and pulled the pushrod out. Nice bend to it and there's a big ole crack running along the outside of the bend. The rocker arm was worn down on the opposite end of the pushrod and on the part where it attaches to the stud. This car isn't going anywhere on it's own.
