I had a really bad knock with my engine once. Sounded like a spark knock/rocker arm knock. Turns out the plug wire boot came off the spark plug and the spark was arcing about 1 inch between the spark plug tip and the wire contact. It made one heck of a noise.

Just make sure to check the simple stuff first.

I doube that by the way he's describing it, it's that, but it "would" be nice for his sake.

I'll check. The knock-rattle is happening at any speed. It's stuck to the car like flies on $#!%.

have you had time to pull your Valve covers off. maybe it is a rocker, or a broken push rod.

so whats the story on this motor. did this company rebuild or build you a short block or a long block? just trying to find out how much of the engine they (the company) worked on & installed. and what you worked on & installed.

Sure DP, they built the motor. Everything but the oil pan and the intake was assembled when I got it.

UPDATE: I don't have a lot of hands on experience with engine internals but I they told me to pull off the valve covers too. Well the noise was coming from the driver's side I was 90% sure. Everything looked fine there. Then I pulled the pass side off and one of the rocker arms was laying on it's side and a bolt was snapped off! The part of the bolt that is stuck in the head is flush with thte head. ACK!

How could this have happened? I have a new harmonic balancer from performance products. I assume it is designed for my car even though it is a 306 (1982-1995 5.0)

Also, any tips on setting the timing? I found out today from my mechanic that the timing was at 12 degrees but the clip was hitting the fuel rail. I guess it is ok, I don't need to bump it any higher unless it gives the car a lot more power.

It was supossed to be about an 80FWHP increase conservatively but the car doesn't feel that powerful to me.

ok Well two things. First your harmonic balance has nothing to do with the fact that the bolt snapped on your rocker. Also are you talking about the timing giving you 80fwhp or the whole 306 combo giving you that? Either way its a lot of power from 4ci and some compression i dont see it happening. But of course its not gonna be powerful when you are missing a rocker arm.

I was talkiing about the whole combo meaning the new 306, higher compression, b-cam, headers and pulleys. He said I should be at 300 FWHP from like 225 or so.

The bolt is stuck in the head so they are shipping me out a new one which I rightfully deserve. They really have treated me like first class and seem to be a good company. I am thinking about selling the new e7's anyone want them?

At least it looks like it's not something more serious like an internal. But you never know. Get that stud outta the head and put the new one in and relash everything, hopefully that is all it was. The balancer has nothing to do with the rockers, it's not the cause. A 302 balancer will fit a 306, all that matters is that it's a 50oz counterweight, (302's) and not a 28oz (351's). All the balancer does is keep the crankshaft from absorbing vibrations and breaking.

Ok, thanks cman. They are sending me out a new head free of charge because the stud is severely stuck in there. They are showing excellent service. We will see the quality over time I guess. Keeping y'all posted and thanks for the replies!

What's the name of the company and where are they located? If you haven't said already and don't mind.

Ken is pretty knowledgeable. They seem to be good guys and back up their work and extremely service oriented. My problem was a bolt that snapped off that attached a rocker arm. Just a bad bolt I guess. You find out how good a company is when you run into trouble like this, they have been great so far.
