I went to the track for the first time

I went to peidmont dragway for a car show and a friend of mine talked me into running with her. She and I have never run at a track before. My first pass was a 10.7 in the 1/8. My best Pass was a 10.4 in the 1/8. I dont feel to bad cause my car is a bone stock none pi 97 Mustang gt. With an exhaust leak. I seen a couple 01 cobras only running 9.5's. I think I could have been better if I wouldn't have been spinning so bad. I plan to do a PI head swap with a professional products typhoon intake. maybe a set of cams I dont know if it would be good. Cause i plan to spray a 150 shot of gas. a set of 3.73 gears and maybe some hardend axels if they will help. And a set of drag radiels. I plan to do this over the winter my questions is this a good plan. or should I go another way. where would this combo maybe put me in the 1/8 I want a general Idea? thanks

You also should try running a Farmington Dragway in Mocksville, N.C. That is were I run at. I have heard that Piedmont does have as good track prep. Never run at piedmont, so not sure. Running a 150 shot on a high mileage car might lead to a hurt bottom end. Not sure how many miles you have, but I would maybe do a 100 or 125. The PI swap, intake, and cams will diff. get you low 9's to high 8's with good driving and traction. Drag radials are a must with nitrous, if not you will spin forever. Good luck.

A few questions. What is the altitude of the track you were running at? What was the air temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure? What were your 60 foot times? An 01 cobras only running 9.5's is few slow. My stock '00 GT runs 9.0x at ATCO NJ when the DA was about 2500 feet.

The first mod you want to make would be the driver mod and some basic maintance. Get some more seat time and learn to drive the car and you could gain a lot. In my bone stock 97GT, I ran as quick as 9.44 in nice weather. With an off-road H pipe and more practice, I got a 9.1. Maybe my car is a factory freak, but you should do no worse than 9.8s, which is low 15s in the 1/4. (all this assuming reasonably close to sea level, heck I'm at 800 feet here) Your 10.5 translates to a low 16s in the 1/4.

Also, do some basic maintance on the car. Replacing the air filter, plugs, wires and fuel filter should help you a bunch, especially if they've been neglected. I believe my car runs quicker than most because I keep up the maintance. Keeping the petal to the floor during shifts helps too. ;)

awesome man. you will love nitrous. i ran a 150 shot for a good while and sprayed a 200 shot a couple times. your bottom end should be good on the 150 shot just get some 2 step colder plugs and pull some timing out and you will be fine. window switch is always a good idea too even though i never ran one. and make sure you get a good heater as well. i was running low 8s on street tires with a 150 shot and was trapping 89 mph.
