I would like advice on adding 100hp to my stock 5.0

I have a 87' Mustang 5.0 convertible that I would like to add about 100hp the most inexpensive way (but not cheap).

Any and all suggestions is appreciated...

The cheapest way would be a 100 shot. Get a used nitrous kit and slap it on.

A premium H/C/I combo would get you there too, but that will cost a couple grand after all of the bolt-ons.

Heads cam intake... Nos is nice but the power runs out when the bottle is empty..

Trick flow top end kit.

Nitrous is a short term solution (i know i tried it), refills can be expensive and hard to get these days.

Ok, this is what I wanted. I was thinking cam, heads and intake. Would this combo give me what I want? And how much am I looking to spend? I don't mind spending money wisely but I'd like to stay under $1000.00.

Not really interested in NOS.

But I'm thinking rods and mains. A cam (not sure which). Head work with nice rockers and such. A bigger intake and throttle body (not sure which). I already have cold air intake system...

You won't get H/C/I installed for $1,000. Even used.

Your only choice to see that much power for under $1,000 is going to be nitrous....period!

So you can either live with the nitrous, live with the reality that you're not going to add 100hp without nitrous for that little money (and see how far that $1,000 will get you), or keep saving until you actually can afford to do it with bolt ons, or forced induction.

Rods and mains alone would probably put you over a grand after machine work and you still want to do head work, plus supporting mods? Ported E7 heads most likely couldn't flow enough air, to reach your goal. A new H/C/I plus rockers, mains and rods, machine work, a new throttle body, new fuel system (pump, injectors, matching MAF) to support the additional 100HP, and before you know it, you're looking at $3,000.

Rods and mains? What for? Unless you going for a full out stroker kit (wayyyy more than $1000 after all.is said and done) your not really doing anything at all. You really need to decide your ultimate goal for the car. Is there a reason you want 100hp, specifically? You drag racing the car and looking for a certain time? Or does 100hp just sound like a good number?

As stated before, for the kind of money you are looking to spend, nitrous (NOS is a Brand Name) is the only way its going to happen. A h/c/i would be the best route to go, but youre looking at twice what you wanted to spend, and thats assuming you can install it yourself.

There are cheap methods of gaining HP, but not in the amount you are looking for while staying n/a.

Even a H/C/I combo good enough to make that much extra power is going to result in some extra supporting mods: subframes, torque boxes, a TKO (a T5 will live for a while if granny shifted). You can get away without doing any of that, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Ok, this is what I wanted to know. I came up with 100hp from previous experience. I've had a 300hp car and I was satisfied. I don't drag or do any other racing. I just enjoy the performance.

A top end kit is what I will start to look into.

What is H/C/I???
Is it the brand name of a H/C/I kit?

H/C/I stands for Heads, Cam and Intake. The Trick Flow kit as mentioned above is a nice top end package to start with. Edelbrock is another, as is the Ford Racing top end kit. It takes all the guesswork out of buying individual components, as they've all been matched and dyno tested to one and other to produce certified and repeatable horsepower gains.
