I posted this on a Ranger forum but thought that it would apply to you all also so I'll copy/paste it:

This is a FWIW thread:

I thought I'd share a method I found that works for cleaning your IAC. I tried the ways most tutorials say, clean with carb/TB/brake cleaner then spray some WD40/etc. Well, that would work for a couple days but then it would go back to the usual moaning and groaning when it's hot outside especially. (This pertains more to my truck but for you SN'ers with IAC problems keep readin')

So I got to thinking and figured that maybe sprayng the lube is actually causing the carbon/gunk to stick even more. So, I got some 3M TB cleaner and decided to clean it well with that and about 20 q-tips. That TB cleaner has a 'lube' additive so to speak. My thinking was that if I just cleaned it well and let the cleaner's lube work then it might not stick so easily. Well, after 5 months it just now started to groan a little! So, I'm going to do the process again and hopefully I'll get another 5+ months out of it.

Before I tried this method, it wouldn't even go a week (cleaning the typically described way) ... and I was about to buy a new one but tried the above described method and it saved me from having to buy a new IAC. I just plan to clean it every 5-6 months. I thought I'd share this because I know that many of you have problems with your IAC's and don't want to buy new ones.

If anyone decides to try my method, just be sure that you clean it well with the q-tips + 3M TB cleaner and no lube afterwards ... You should have good results.

Thanks for the fyi. When i cleaned mine i think i used some carb/choke cleaner as well. It took care of the random dying i was experiencing. It also seemed to reduce the number of times the engine wouldnt fire up normally. I do seem to hear a funny noise that i dont remember hearing before cleaning but it is faint and is generally covered up by the loud exhaust and all the other squeeks and rattles the car makes.
