Is there anywhere online or in books, or can anyone just tell me, that is the method for identifying whether the engine in a 65 A-code fastback is actually an A-code engine?

I believe that the only difference is the 4-barrel intake, 4100 series carb and flat-top pistons for increased compression.

This book:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/09...002-2991346-2139209?s=books&v=glance&n=283155
is the best I know of for ID'ing original engine parts. It covers what you want to know.

The A Code if I am not mistaken should have an Autolite 4100 with 1.08 stamped on it with a circle around it. That assumes it has the original carb.

Look for a thin aluminum tag attached to the top of the carb bowl, square on 3 sides, pointed at the attachment point ( carb bowl screw) Sometimes this tag is also attached to the intake just forward of the carb. Also check the date codes on the intake to see if it was built before the build date of the car.
