interesting write up and It could very well be my issue. Mine only happens when the car is hot and stopped for a few mins leading me to believe it's heat soak of some type. I did the base idle reset and no change. the fuel pump and filter are next since I need to do it anyway.

What are the gauges doing when idle drops?

I finally captured a video of what's going on. this is directly after a new tfi and new coil swap. I drove the car for about 20 mins and it started doing this in my driveway after idling for around 7 mins. distributor is 3 years old.

edit: ignore the oil pressure gauge reading so low, the connector needs to be replaced

Nobody really takes the time to realize the camshaft spins twice as fast as the crank

That doesn't make sense as the crank sprocket is smaller than the cam sprocket. The crank has to rotate twice for one revolution of the cam. So the cam spins half as fast as the crank..

so I think I finally figured out what my issue was, I've been driving the car for 3 days and so far so good. first the battery cable going from my starter solenoid on the fender to the battery was a cheap Aluminum 4gauge for audio equipment. second my throttle blade was set too far open, I brought it down to about 500 rpms and reset the ecm. now the iac can do it's job, I think it was staying closed to compensate for the extra air.

Good battery cables are surely important. What type / size replacement cable did you use?
