Idle Issues

another one

Ok the car still wont idle right, all vacuum hoses leak free/replaced and etc.
i know its not a intake manifold leak or something cause nothing happens with ether being sprayed. it definitely electronical cause it will idel normal perfect and then jump up hang at about 1500 then burble down at about a 100rpms increments and finally hit about 850rpms then sometimes it sticks but if you touch the throttle its all over again...

i was wondering if there is anything speed density related that could cause this, possibly the tps sensor or egr? my only codes are egr voltage related ?

its probably your tps dude sounds like ur having nothing but problems with that car

tps huh? i was leaning towards IAC but what do i know....

im going to do a dvm test on it to see its voltage, at idle if its close or fine, im going to remove the iac and clean it. i have been reading the idle surge list, but no one really has speed dens and having the same idle issue?

the car is really ok, i think its in need of a MAF but idk anymore. im not putting anymore money towards mods. im really mad i let my self dump as much money as i have. although inlcuding the car and all mods in sig im less than or equal too 3000! which i could easily get/sell it for even with its dirty turbines and horribly faded paint... so i cant complain plus everyone who has seen it knows how rust free and clean it is for being an outside kept car....the car just doesnt idle right and doesnt really impress me, i think its a top end car cause once it starts rolling it wont stop but it just dont have the jump or maybe its traction issues either way it just doesnt have enough neck snap IMO......

I had the same thing happen to me when I was EFI, lower to block gasket had a leak. Evaded ether/carb cleaner test because it was internal. Crank it and pull the oil filler cap, is it drawing in alot?

Just a thought

See the "Surging Idle Checklist for help with all your idle/stall problems. The first two posts contain all the updates to the fixes. At last count there were 24 possible causes and fixes for surging idle/stall problems. I continue to update it as more people post fixes or ask questions.

yeah i read im going to try tps and also asecretfiles idea 1st thing first if the manifold has too comes off then its time for a carb!

ok just checked the oil fill cap and no suction/drawing at all..even at WOT....

i forgot to mention this but it it will calm down after 5-10 mins but it still has a 100rpm muble from 1k to about 850ish....thats why i think its the tps or iac. i really need to read more on testing the tps cause im confused am i suppoe to stab the wires with the dvm probes? or just put them in at the connector where the wire leads.? also i could clean the IAC im sure there is a massive grease ball on the ports i should have done that when it was all apart but i didnt want to take nothing apart that i thought was working before the swap. im pretty sure its something electronical the mustang gods would spare me intake manifold leaks sionce it took me three or was it four times of reinstalling to figure out that it was just a leak at where we drilled the hole for the coolant spout thing...grrr,,,,

You guys with idle problems could same a lot of time chasing your tails if you would go through the Surging Idle Checklist. Over 50 different people contributed information to it. The first two posts have all the fixes, and steps through the how to find and fix you idle problems without spending a lot of time and money.

lol its normal. lol. my car does the same thing, has since i bought it, new tps, set it at around .75 v. and replaced the iac/iab (whichever you prefer) the iac helped for maybe a day, cleaned the throttle body, replaced the TB to intake gasket obviously, upper plenum gasket and carb cleaner the lower gasket to check for leaks, i just heal toe the car everywhere lol.

^^yep im just going to live with it till the motor is absolutely blown and has to come out! so hopefully never

im just going to check my tps an iac since to clean/adjust them is free it ant hurt....
isnt the tps suppose to be a .99-1.5v?

ill report bakc when i adjust the tps. i would like to be a idle fix. but if not the car still runs good....

Please listen to jrichker!

His list is all inclusive...if you follow it, you will solve your hanging idle.

I have fought this problem as well. Before you buy any parts and spend any money, clean the 10 pin connectors (salt and pepper shakers) and the TPS connector.

Then set the idle per the surge check list. And yes, you must probe the TPS wires. If you disconnect them, the voltage readings are meaningless.

okay, but i mean do i probe where the wire goes into the connector or do i punch a hole in the actual wire?

The following proceedure is included in the surging idle checklist:

Setting the TPS: you'll need a good Digital Voltmeter (DVM) to do the job. Set the TPS voltage at .5- 1.1 range. Because of the variables involved with the tolerances of both computer and DVM, I would shoot for somewhere between .6 and 1.0 volts. Unless you have a Fluke or other high grade DVM, the second digit past the decimal point on cheap DVM’s is probably fantasy. Since the computer zeros out the TPS voltage every time it powers up, playing with the settings isn't an effective aid to performance or drivability. The main purpose of checking the TPS is to make sure it isn't way out of range and causing problems.

The Orange/White wire is the VREF 5 volts from the computer. You use the Dark Green/Lt green wire (TPS signal) and the Black/White wire (TPS ground) to set the TPS. Use a pair of safety pins to probe the TPS connector from the rear of the connector. You may find it a little difficult to make a good connection, but keep trying. Put the safety pins in the Dark Green/Lt green wire and Black/White wire. Make sure the ignition switch is in the Run position but the engine isn't running.

Here’s a TPS tip I got from NoGo50

When you installed the sensor make sure you place it on the peg right and then tighten it down properly. Loosen the back screw a tiny bit so the sensor can pivot and loosen the front screw enough so you can move it just a little in very small increments. I wouldn’t try to adjust it using marks.

A.) Always adjust the TPS and Idle with the engine at operating temp. Dive it around for a bit if you can and get it nice and warm.

B.) When you probe the leads of the TPS, do not use an engine ground, put the ground probe into the lead of the TPS. You should be connecting both meter probes to the TPS and not one to the TPS and the other to ground.

C.) Always reset the computer whenever you adjust the TPS or clean/change any sensors. I just pull the battery lead for 10 minutes.

D.) The key is to adjust the TPS voltage and reset the computer whenever the idle screw is changed.

The TPS is a variable resistor, must like the volume control knob on a cheap radio. We have all heard them crackle and pop when the volume is adjusted. The TPS sensor has the same problem: wear on the resistor element makes places that create electrical noise. This electrical noise confuses the computer, because it expects to see a smooth increase or decrease as the throttle is opened or closed.

TPS testing: most of the time a failed TPS will set code 23 or 63, but not always. Use either an analog meter or a DVM with an analog bar graph and connect the leads as instructed above. Turn the ignition switch to the Run position, but do not start the engine. Note the voltage with the throttle closed. Slowly open the throttle and watch the voltage increase smoothly, slowly close the throttle and watch the voltage decrease smoothly. If the voltage jumps around and isn’t smooth, the TPS has some worn places in the resistor element. When the throttle is closed, make sure that the voltage is the same as what it was when you started. If it varies more than 10%, the TPS is suspect of being worn in the idle range of its travel.

JRICHKER, i have not been ignoring you, i have been reading that....i know better than not to listen to you....its just im so hands on directions are like a foreign language...

i did figur it out! im using the safety pins as contact points.....so the car is at operating temp and then i put in koeo and see if the voltage of between .6-1.0volts??

does my problem seem more tps or iac or intake leak

Set the TPS per instruction. Typical TPS problems are an idle that goes higher and will not come down until you turn the ignition switch off and back on again quickly.

Once the TPS is set, fix the codes. You may want to post the exact codes in your future post. Sometimes combinations of codes can point to a problem in the wiring that would be difficult to spot otherwise.

EGR problems can cause some strange idle contions. Cleaing the 10 pin connectors is a good plan while you are cleaning and checking things.

i pulled codes 34 and neutral safety circuit failure(aod to t-5 swap)

Code 34 Or 334 - EGR voltage above closed limit - Failed sensor, carbon between EGR pintle valve and seat holding the valve off its seat. Remove the EGR valve and clean it with carbon remover. Prior to re-installing see if you can blow air through the flange side of the EGR by mouth. If it leaks, there is carbon stuck on the pintle valve seat, replace the EGR valve ($85-$95).

If the blow by test passes, and you have replaced the sensor, then you have electrical ground problems. Check the resistance between the black/white wire on the MAP/BARO sensor and then the black/white wire on the EGR and the same wire on the TPS. It should be less than 1.5 ohm. Next check the resistance between the black/white wire and the negative battery post. It should be less than 1.5 ohm.

Note that all resistance tests must be done with power off. Measuring resistance with a circuit powered on will give false readings and possibly damage the meter.

Let’s put on our Inspector Gadget propeller head beanies and think about how this works:
The EGR sensor is a variable resistor with ground on one leg and Vref (5 volts) on the other. Its’ resistance ranges from 4000 to 5500 Ohms measured between Vref & ground, depending on the sensor. The center connection of the variable resistor is the slider that moves in response to the amount of vacuum applied. The slider has some minimum value of resistance greater than 100 ohms so that the computer always sees a voltage present at its’ input. If the value was 0 ohms, there would be no voltage output. Then the computer would not be able to distinguish between a properly functioning sensor and one that had a broken wire or bad connection. The EGR I have in hand reads 700 Ohms between the slider (EPV) and ground (SIG RTN) at rest with no vacuum applied. The EGR valve or sensor may cause the voltage to be above closed limits due to the manufacturing tolerances that cause the EGR sensor to rest at a higher position than it should.

The following sensors are connected to the white 10 pin connector (salt & pepper engine harness connectors)


This will affect idle quality by diluting the intake air charge

well i pulled off the iac to check it out to see if it were clogged and it was fine i installed it upside down and fired her up the car was idling at 1800 so i reinstalled it the right way and it went to about 1200 then i unplugged the thing and it went to a good 850idle..... i let it warm up some then plugged it back in and its at a stock idle, but its still hunting. i turned the a/c on and it jumps to about 1200 then back to 850 then back to whatever then smoothes out and has a 50rpm surge.....
oh and i cleaned my 10 pin ocnnectors which were fine, i ended up breaking one of the plastic snap connector pieces they still had contact grease on them i think someone was in there before though.....
