The other day was sorta nice here in PA and took my stang, see signiture, for a cruise. Got a few miles from home and heard a little squeeling from under the hood. Then I felt a power loss, pushed in the clutch and it went instantly dead. There was also a smell of burning belts and a bit of smoke. I know the smell because I had an alternator go once on my truck and the smell stays with you.
It was dark, and, of course, the batteries were dead in my flashlight and my tools were in my jeep. Oh, and the hood light doesnt work. I went to start it to see if it would and it did, so I went straight home. The sound and smell were gone, but I knoe the problem remains.
Its been too cold to work on it (shade tree mechanic) but I am planning to pull the belt and test all the pullies for drag/bearing action. I am betting on it being the idler pulley.
How bad is the job and where can I get a reliable replacement without getting ripped off at the dealer? P.S. I do my own work, except for exhaust and tire mounting/front-end alignment.
