I have a relatively stock 1990 5.0 gt 5sp (only modifications include headers, exhaust, and ford racing spark plug wires 9mm? and possibly spark plugs I dont know the specs on them- all of which came with the car.) I have only owned this car for around a month or so, and I am new to the game when it comes to working on it. I'm trying to learn though. Anyways, I am having idling problems and need some help. When I push the engine some on the acceleration, my engine starts to idle at unusually high rpms. For example, upon acceleration, when I engage the clutch, the rpms go up rather than down and then in neutral the engine idles at around 2500-3000 rpms. This only occurs on occasion, however, and not every time I push the engine (which is not all that often). I have read that with fuel injected vehicles, it could be a million different things, but I have tried only a few things to fix it. I took off my IAC valve and cleaned it w/ carburetor cleaner, as well as removing my throttle body and cleaning it because I heard that with the carbon build-up, it is possible that too much air is getting into my engine due to these 2 things not being able to fully close. This, however, did not work, and I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and how I can go about fixing it. Thanks!

Welcome to the wonderful world of 5.0 Mustang idling..You have now joined a quest that has many begginings, ending,s and routes...lol...Anyway,mine had a bad IAC..But you could have a dirty TB,vacc. leak,dirty/bad IAC,bad TPS,unmetered air....a whole lot of root causes...Check for vacc. leaks first then the IAC and TPS and go from there....good luck to ya.

See Help me create the "Surging Idle Checklist" sticky at the top of the forum for help with your idle problems.

Top culprit for your problem is a bad TPS.
