what would cause the metal piece to keep breaking

the oil pump shaft or the gear? You're gonna have to be a little more specific or show a picture, or do you mean the tiny metal piece that's on the plastic rotor?

the metal piece on the plastic rotor. the car makes kind of a squeeling sound at 3k rpm then it breaks:Track:

maybe bushing or bearing is bad allowing the shaft to waller
around and make contact with the wire posts on the cap

With the rotor in place can you move the shaft side to side? I so the shaft bearing is shot and the rotor tabs are hitting the cap contacts and breaking the rotor tab.

Sounds like your dizzy is going out on you, so it wobbles, then the metal piece catches on your cap, so it breaks. Pull your dizzy out and see if the shaft has play

Yeah, it's got one bolt on the hold down. Remove that and pull it straight out.

Mark it before you pull it out...may save a bit of aggravation trying to get it back together...

I say hand crank the engine to where it's lined up with the number one cylinder, then you don't have to mark anything, pretty easy
