On the new MSD 6BTM ignition box I got, it has two different ways to hook it up, One use the white wire trigger, where I think it uses the Duraspark ignition to "trigger" the MSD box. It appears that the only advantage of this hookup is that it is easier. The MSD box would still supply the capacitive discharge spark to the coil.

The other setup is using the magnetic pickup right from the distributor to trigger the MSD box. I am guessing that this would be the better hookup since the Duraspark box would be taken out of the equation.

Any opinions on which one would be better, or does it really matter?

Well, I can't say I know if one would be better or not. I know that on '87-93 Mustangs, you can't use the magnetic pickup wire. The easiest way to put an MSD box on one of those cars is to just get one of the adapter harnesses. You might be better off asking in one of the 5.0 forums maybe...I'm not too familiar with the stock ignition setup on a '79 or how you hook a MSD box into it.
