I'll build the header chart.......catagories?????

So the question was...........

"Maybe somebody should make a Header Chart.....like the Modified Tire and Wheel Chart??????"

Im up to doing this, what categories should the chart have? To start with it'll have the obvious stuff.........

Brand/stock #
Engine size
Modifications
Steering system (power/TCP/Flaming River rack .etc)
Fastener type
Clearance issues
Ease of install

It will be in PDF format and much like Nicks wheel-tire chart with an enter form

Do we need header types, such as Tri-y, Shorties, Long Tubes...?

I'm assuming manufacturers will be referenced.

I have Hedman Shorties on a '69 302 with all power accessories (steering, A/c and the like) and there are no clearance issues.

I think it is a great idea

You should also have in there:

1. YEAR of the mustang

2. WHERE the headers came from. I know some headers although the same thing (like tri-ys) seem to very on fit depending on where you order them from.

3. WHAT kinda of gaskets

For Instance:

I would supply my combo to you as follows:

351c 4v
1965 Mustang
Ford Power Train headers for 67-8 351c swap
Stock Manual Steering without a shelby quick steer kit
Standard header bolts
Mr Gasket 4v black gaskets

Needed to 'bump' 3 tubes to alleviate small touching problem on lower shock towers. Also need to use 3 peice 1964 falcon motor mounts for this install

How about the more performance oriented things like tube length or style(equal length/tuned, unequal length, blockhugger, tri-y, long tube, shorties, etc), the primary tube diameter(1+1/2", 1+5/8", or 1+3/4") and the collector size/style(3" collector/flange, etc).

Honestly how many people reallly know that?
I knew it for about 3 seconds when I bought mine

When you order up say hedman shorties....don't they have a model number? Doesn't that model number dictate the side of the tube and collectors?

65, Hedman elites, ps, t5/new stock ford bellhousing, cable clutch (wouldnt say this combo really works at all as the a header tube blocks the proper routing of the clutch cable). On the drivers side the tube clears the shock tower by a smigen but not more.

Requires '69-70 motor mounts (taller style).
Slight clearance issue to steering box.

I found it easiest to mount headers from bottom with motor mounts removed (during engine install).

Mine are the nickel plated ones, and have slight surface rust near collectors. I wish I would have bought the ceramic version instead.

1970 Mach 1, 351W with Summit fabricated valve covers. Hedman shorty headers with 1 5/8 primarys, 3" collectors. Bolting them up to AFR heads required cutting the bottom of the flange to fit on the head on the drivers side. I had to bend the number seven exhaust tube away from the engine about 1/2 inch and dent the same tube to clear the valve covers. Minor dinging of tubes on the passenger side to clear the heads studs. I haven't bolted up my Tremec with scattershield yet, and I haven't put the engine in the car yet either. When it does go in, it will have TCP's rack and pinion to consider.

That's all I got so far. With the AFR heads, and fabricated valve covers, they are a PAIN to get to fit.

eric, i have the same combo you have except i have ac, no fitment problems at all, though i did have to ding some of the tubes to clear the header bolts. one thing i can say about installation of the engine with the headers installed, if you unbolt the idler arm you can drop the whole steering linkage down about 3-4 inches and have plenty of room, i also installed them with the tranny bolted to the motor as well, hell everything but the carb was bolted on, including the clutch fan, once i figured out the idler arm thing it was a snap, just thought i'd throw in that info for anyone that is unsure if they will clear that way. we also didn't put a scratch on the paint anywhere either

Awesome info on the chart guys, thanks for your in-put.

As for the submissions, I’m not taking them yet. I will give you a specific form to fill out where all of the info will be required, there won't be any guessing when it does come time to choose. It will not have collector size, ect because this info is already available to you from the manufacture. I will have a data base of all manufacturers and also hyperlinks for easy access. It will have fit info for specific application, with specific modification. It will resemble Nicks wheel and tire chart in organization.

The purpose of this thread is to get everyone’s in-put on how the chart should be organized, what info it should contain.

If you have in put on the chart, please share, otherwise, please hold your submissions until I have the form set-up.

Hedman Hedders
Mustang 1979-1993,
302W-5.0L,
1-5/8'' Tubes, 3'' Collectors
P/N 88390

1965 Mustang. Tremec 5spd SROD bellhousing with cable clutch, R&C Motorsports adjustable coilover Mustang II front suspension, fox body power brake booster. Fits like it was made for this combo. Will not work with T-sump oil pan or Lakewood bellhousing due to passenger side header.

Tested all currently available long tube headers for fox body and vintage Mustangs except BBK long tubes. These were the only currently available long tube headers that fit with this combo without modification.

Old Mac headers fit, but are no longer available. (Mac changed the driver side tube routing)

Motor mounts may also be an issue. My #88320 Hedman long tubes should fit a 69 coupe but I apparently have the "tall" style convertible mounts cuz the headers do not fit. Need to swap out for the "short" style mounts. Just another variable.

The unknown brand long tubes I currently have installed did not require any change to the PS bracket but they are way close to the starter = heat soak.

Clutch Linkage: Hydraulic (McLeod 1300 series Hyd TO bearing)
** Also had these in when I had my Art Carr C4 trans
Steering Type: Manual, Flaming River Box
Fitment: Had to grind 2 small areas of the scattershield flange for clearance. Not enough to do any harm to scattershield.
Ground Clearance: Excellent, fits tight to body
