I've been doing a lot of research. Originally I wanted a Harley but after looking I think I'm set on a V-Star 650 classic. I found a 2004 going for 4k. I like cruiser bikes not crotch rockets.
My dad has been a biker for about 35yrs now and the only way he would have a Harley is to sell for another name bike,he has owned them and hates them,mainly cuz they require constant maintaince.For the last 8-10yrs he's been riding Suzuki's,cruiser bikes and has never had to have them worked on other than normal maintance.Right now he is riding a Suzuki Intruder and he loves it,it a 1500, has more power than any harley,Most people look at it and think its a Harley,sounds Like a Harley.
The V-Star 650 is a Yamaha V-twin and I hear nothing but good things about it. http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/roadtests/yamaha_v_star_650_classic/index.html
Yamaha makes great bikes! I'm not really familiar with the v-stars though...more so with the Suzuki Boulevards (great bikes). Make sure you get something fast enough, because riding a 600cc V-twin cruiser is NO fun on the highway... I borrowed a friends Honda Shadow for my driving test and it was great for that...but it was slow as balls and not fun at all on the highway.

I would say ride one first, then ride a bigger bike (883/1200 sportster maybe, Suzuki Boulevard 109 or something) to see if you think you'd like the extra power. IMO, even a cruiser needs some grunt My dad has been a biker for about 35yrs now and the only way he would have a Harley is to sell for another name bike,he has owned them and hates them,mainly cuz they require constant maintaince.

well then your dad should check out a Harley made in the past 15 years. that old maintenance knock applies to the old AMF bikes, not newer ones.
this is just plain wrong. you have no clue what you are talking about. my stock Harley has nearly TWICE the power of your dad's Intruder.
Harley Davidson Night Rod = 120hp
Intruder 1500 = 67hp
120 > 67
Intruder = pwwwned!

and the Boss Hoss is 355hp 405tq for the slow one, and 405hp 425tq for the fast one. http://www.bosshoss.net/products.asp
.I WAS NOT trying to start a debate,I also said that I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT BIKES,I was usuing my dads exp. and yes he has owned another one in the last 15yrs and besides the conastant maintaince,it would leak oil.SO unless you personally know me or my dad and know what he has been through with Harley's...please dont bash on me.Me personally I dont give a **** for bikes because of both parents where nearly killed 4 yrs ago because of the dumb ass aggie in a Accord slammed into them and Hospitalized my dad for 3 1/2 weeks and my mom for 2.
Now as for Harley's hp,there is only one motor that produces that HP and thats the Revolution engines and that only comes in one model,the VSRC.And as for the intruders you maybe right...but as I said I know nothing about bikes.and the only one thats gonna make any hp is the one still running.
But you could have kindly corrected me and not straight to bashing on me.
maybe your dad just doesn't know how to take care of a bike then. newer ones do not leak oil or require excess maintainence. the thing about internet forums is, if you make claims without knowing what you are talking about, someone is going to call you out on it.
Whatever,Garage kept..weekends only...oil change every 3k miles,how much more care do they need?I did say that I didny know about bikes...I was just saying what I knew of my dads probs,Now maybe it was bad luck and he got a lemmon,so with that being said his mind isnt changed of them from those issues.Anyways I dont care about bikes so im through with this post,guy asked a question thought I would give him my dads exp with certain bikes and Im being called a liar of which I really dont take lightly.
