I bought an impact wrench and it's all new to me. I have never owned one before. I was taking my tires off this afternoon and sometimes when I set the impact wrench down, it would spin the socket on its own. Not always but sometimes. You can hear a little bit of hissing when it's just sitting on the floor. Is that normal? Should I bring it back for an exchange?

the hissing isnt normal. look for a leak where the hose and gun meet.

what brand did you buy? i would def bring it back though. the hissing means its leaking air, which very well could be the air coupler though. i would really recommend an Ingersoll Rand Impact gun. i believe they make the best air tools money can buy. its all i use every day. even if you wont use the gun more than once or twice a year, that thing will last (just keep it oiled!).

IR titanium 2135Ti FTW!

Acutally I have their "quiet" gun...still runs 650ft lbs, but its quieter than my 1/4" air ratchet. Nice on the ears.

The hissing is probably just where the hose connects as stated above, no issue there. Pretty normal, my hose at work does it all the time. Dont know about the whole socket coming off deal though. Is it spinning all on its own, without you pulling the trigger? If thats the case, you deffinately need to take it back.

Sounds like it just needs oil. I've got 3 IR impact guns and every one of them has done that once or twice over the years.

It is an Ingersoll-Rand 231c. It seemed to have spit out some oil around the time the socket spun without pulling the trigger. I'll be using it again tomorrow. A buddy is coming over to work on his car.

I'll call Ingersoll-Rand tech support tomorrow.

Thanks.

IR makes excellent impact guns, I am kind of surprised you are having a problem with one.. I have the first generation of the composite IR I forget what model number it is but I bought it 6 years ago and I LOVE it.

i have 2 air impact guns that i use at work, a MATCO MT1769Q which is super quiet and has 1000ft-lbs of torque, and a MATCO MT2112 which is 3/8 drive and has 280 ft-lbs of torque. both are made by IR and they are awesome. they have never failed me. i also have a MATCO 3/8 and 1/2 drive electric impact guns that are great to have as well. i dont have an air compressor at my house so i bust out the electrics. i like the electric ones at work for when im rebuilding hubs on or if we have a customer with a flat tire that is in the parking lot and cant drive in.

I have the 2135Ti, and I love it. It's probably the best impact I have ever owned. Much better than the Nitro Cat I had before. I'd try giving it some more oil, and making sure it's greased up well. Mine shipped with no grease at all.

I called Ingersoll-Rand. They suggested I drop a few drops of 10w oil into the air inlet. It was an intermittent thing so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm sure one ultra-cool moderator already suggested that.

Well, we used it today. Removed and install two wheels. Remove and install two CC plate nuts. It didn't do its uncommanded spinning but it was hissing a little while it was sitting on the ground. Should I give it another chance or just take it back now?

The air guns I use at a guys shop hiss air. It's normal on the guns. Those guns actually have a relief on the handles that slowly leak air out so it doesn't build up pressure and blow the hose.

As stated, it's normal for them to hiss a little to relieve pressure. It may also be coming from you quick connect as well. They've got a tendency to leak air at times.
