First off I was a member here way back just forgot all my info. Anyway I blew my rear end in my 95 gt and need some help. The local shop said 1200 to rebuild it but only a couple hundred to replace the whole thing if I brought a used one in. My question is what years are a direct replacement? I know a guy with a fox body rear end with the 5 lug conversion but I don't know if it is direct or not. I am sure the guy will only do it for a couple hundred if it is a direct replacement. Also how hard is it to swap it? I can do some things myself, I replaced the t-5 myself and that wasn't to tough. I just want to get my car back on the road but I don't have a lot of cash to throw at it. Thanks for the help guys.

If you can install a t-5 then you can replace a rear-end given you have the tools for the job.

94-95 are direct replacements.

However you can use a fox rear-end i believe you just have to have the correct yolk/flange.

Google/Ebay/Craigslist and find a rear-end for your year with a set of gear's in it already.

okay I found one out of a 94 but the guy says it has lower control arms or something that are different but he still says it is a direct bolt in. He says it's like a cobra rear. I am confused. What tools are needed to swap them out? He says he swaps them out in under an hour so it can't be that bad I have just never done it. Thanks again.

Jack
Jack-stands
A Variety of sockets
Ratchet
Some open end wrenches
Screwdrivers
Needle Nose pliers
Possibly a Large Hammer
Maybe some duct tape :nice:

That should pretty much be it,you might also wanna get some extra hands to help you hold, align and be a tool fetcher.

there should be no difference between a gt and cobra rear end they are both 8.8 rears, unless its a independent rear.

94-98 8.8 rears are the same, might have a different gear set,but the housing, brakes, axles mounting points are the same.

99-04 8.8 have a different control arm mounting point IIRC.

fox body 8.8 have the same housing, but shorter axle shafts, drum brakes and 4 lugs.but it will physicaly bolt up to our cars.

dont forget wd40 or some other kind of penetrating oil.
those bolts/nut may be stuck pretty good.
depending on where you live, you should soak everything a couple days before doing the job.
and get some breaker bars.

Yes I forgot those few key components to complete this job.

WD/40 or PB will do great when theses parts wont break lose also like davis said a breaker bar will do wonder's to help you get that extra muscle you need sometimes.
