install starter on a 65 fastback

i recently purchased a new starter for my 65 fastback with a top loader 4 speed. i am having trouble getting it to fit properly in the hole. the bolts line up but will not fit in. Any ideas?

It may be the result of having the wrong starter for the installed manual flywheel. If its for a 157 tooth flywheel the internal offset of the starter's bendix gear is the same as an automatic and that starter is universal for both of those applications. If it has a 164 tooth flywheel, the internal offset of the bendix gear locates the gear closer to the front of that flywheel and thus a different starter that is strictly for that design.

Both starters will have the same bolt pattern but only the correct one will work.
