I have a 2001 mustang with the mach 460 and just put in a new Alpine head unit. I used the metra 70-5509 harness that I read about on this forum.

The problems I have are:

1. When the engine is running and the stereo is off, I hear some noise coming through the speakers. When I turn the stereo on it seems to go away.

2. Whenever I turn the stereo on, I hear a loud pop from the amp speakers

Well, I did some searching on google and found out the engine noise "alternator whine" and is probably caused by too many things connected to the same ground. It's not a good idea to use the ground in the cars harness, it's better to connect the radio's ground wire to the chassis/firewall or something. So I'm going to try that tomorrow.

I also baught a pulse timer relay from ebay, which should delay the amp from turning on. This will make it not turn on untill after the signal is sent that makes the loud pop noise.

What I want to know is, does anyone have experience with timer relays? I suppose i just splice it into the amp turn on wire, but what wires would I use on the relay? It looks like it has quite a few on there.

I've worked with the timer relays but there's a few versions out there. If you provide a diagram or pic with the relay then I can draw something up for you.

I know that is hard to read. THe orange wire is normally closed, the brown wire is normally open, the yellow wire is common, the black w/stripe wire is the trigger input, black is ground, and red is a +12 VDC ground.

There is also a blue loop wire, which uncut will trigger upon recieving negative and cut will trigger upon negative going away.

Here is a side view, this must be the timer adjustment.

Ok, I'm going to guess and say that I should connect the remote turn on wire from the head unit to the Black/white striped wire (trigger input) on the relay. Then I connect the orange wire (normally closed) on the relay to the amps power wire.

Does this sound right? anyone?

Also why are there two amp power wires and two ground wires on the amp harness? I'm guessing there are two amps in the 460 system?
