Installing a pi Intake

hmm...I dont know what to do?..haha should I try to return the adapter plates or should I use them?... I wont have to use rtv with the adapter plates right?

Like laser said.......use the plates.......and stock gaskets......One thing I can add is don't just look at the power it produces........you can broaden you power band and have more usable rpm that will help greatly at higher rpms......with a good tune you will see even more............you can make useable power to 6100 rpms with a good ported plenum (accufab and a dremel) and PI lwr and a tune.......for example I raised my shift point from 1-2 by 150 rpm to 6150 and gained .1 in the 1/8th.........and .25 in the 1/4.......useable rpm is what these cars love!

Yellow is right. So many people get caught up in peak numbers. Before my tune my baseline was only a few HP below my tuned HP but the difference was the usable range and the smoothing of the HP/TQ curve. It also knocked 3 tenths off at the track.

Yea, thats definately a good idea...I have an auto...so Is it even possible to adjust my shift point that high in first?...maybe with a custom tune?...Do you think i would need a tb/ plenum to do this though?..the stock ones wont be good enough with just the pi intake?

Stock TB/Plenum are decent for the PI intake, they are something to consider after you do the swap, but aren't that big of a bottleneck IMO. The next largest bottleneck on the engine will be the headers/exhaust I think, although for people like me not willing to go through the hassle to get longtubes installed...Midpipes and catbacks are the extent of what you can do.

The ONLY way you should adjust your auto tranny is with a J-mod. Increasing pressure via tuner or anything like that will destroy the tranny earlier, a J-mod will not only do the same thing more effectively but will also extend tranny life due to reduced wear between shifts. A tranny cooler is a good thing to have installed too.

ok..thank you..Ill save my money for a pi cam probably...I already have Longtubes/ catback.... I have no idea how to do this j-mod and would not attempt to do it?..will any shops do them?..a tuner really puts that much pressure on the tranny..my bros been running it like that for like 2-3 years and hasnt had a problem? Is it really that much wear when you drive normal?

Although i've never done it, a J-mod looks pretty straightforward. There's a writeup online with pics and everything...you basically buy some parts, drop the tranny pan, and drill some holes in predetermined spots, then replace everything. It firms up the shift points without over-pressurizing the tranny, it also firms up shifts so there isn't slack and unnecessary heat built up when it shifts gears. I bet a shop would do it if they had experience working on transmissions, the parts for the J-mod only cost like $90 I think?

There is absolutely nothing at all wrong with firming up the shift duration and line pressure with a tune. I've done it on dozens of cars with a 4R70W/AOD and there has never been any adverse side effects. increasing the line presure and shortening the duration of teh clutch engagement with the tune keeps heat out of the band and clutches and actually will increase the life of the clutches, band, and pumps. You just have to know what you are doing. Before you consider the j-mod, you really should consider firming up the shifts by way of the tune and/or a shift kit and billet servos.

Unfortunatly I lost the bookmark for the J-mod info, but Jerry (the most informed person on 4r70W, AODE Transmissions on earth basically, believe he was one of the main engineers of it?? Not sure on that, someone else will have to verify my info) made this shiftkit. He states somewhere on the site about the fact that increasing the line pressure with a tuner will shorten the life of the tranny.

your correct.. follow what jerry says he KNOWS these trannies in and out.
